The Financial Aid Department provides financial assistance service to students who are enrolled full-time in a program at Dawson College. Loans and bursaries help students who wish to study full-time but who do not have the financial means to do so. Students who are registered on a full-time basis in a program of a minimum of 180 hours per semester, may apply for the Quebec Loans and Bursaries Program. Applications can be submitted throughout the year; however, it takes approximately six to eight weeks for processing of applications for the fall or winter semester.

To Qualify
In order to qualify for financial help, you must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Similar aid is available from your home province if you are not a resident of Quebec.
Once the government has reached a decision on your application, you will receive a letter of confirmation indicating the amount of financial assistance granted. You can then pick up your guarantee certificate from the Financial Aid Office, upon presentation of a valid Dawson College student identification card.
Throughout the semester, you will find selected information pertaining to financial aid posted on the bulletin board outside Room 2E.8B and advertised in the Dawson College Daily Bulletin.
Some Details to Consider
Under the Quebec Loans and Bursaries Program, students are expected to help cover the cost of their education, as are their parents, even if their child is over 18 years of age. The government calculates the financial award taking into account the amount parents should be able to contribute. Once independent status is obtained, parental income is not considered.
Independent Student Status applies under the following conditions:

you are married, separated, divorced, widowed
-
you have supported yourself and did not study full-time for at least two years
-
you are the head of a single-parent family and have at least one dependent child who lives with you.

you are living with a partner as though married, without being married and have at least one dependent child
-
yu are or have been the natural or adoptive parent of a child
-
you have reached your 20th week of pregnancy
-
both your parents are deceased
-
you have lived or you are living in a foster home
-
you hold an undergraduate university degree
-
your Family situation is exceptional
Deadlines
Application forms for Quebec Loans and Bursaries are available in April for students planning to attend Dawson College the following fall. Students are advised to fill out applications early, as it takes approximately six to eight weeks to process them.

Other Bursaries and Scholarships
Dawson occasionally receives donations from industries, associations and citizens' groups. Some are scholarships; others are small bursaries. Most are oriented towards specific disciplines or cultural communities, and they are usually dedicated to second and third-year students. These scholarships are administered by Graham Weeks in room 2E.7.
