Program Description
A key element of video game creation is level design. Level Designers usually work in a team and are responsible for the game-play and game experience. They create the playing fields where the action of the game takes place. Each Level Designer is usually responsible for one level of a game.
This program is designed to help the student develop technical skills, focusing in particular on designing and building video game levels. The program is especially suited to the constantly changing technological environment, to teamwork and to a demanding and sometimes stressful work situation.
Candidates should possess characteristics such as drawing ability, a sense of design and innovation, creativity, an aptitude for teamwork, proficiency in working with computers and be detail oriented.
Exit Profile
Upon successful completion of the Video Game Level Design Program, the graduate will have aquired the skills and competencies to preform the tasks of an entry-level position related to the occupation of Level Designer in the video gaming industry.
Working under the direction and supervision of creative and technical project managers, graduates will be able to:
- analyze and compare the design of various games
- design and produce game levels
- use relevant application software in the exercise of the profession
- participate in a video game production
- communicate effectively with members of the production team
- effectively manage time and stress during individual and group work
- adapt to the constantly changing technological tools required of the video gaming industry
- test video games

This program is offered in collaboration with Emploi-Quebec. In addition to the Ministerial and College admission requirements listed below you must be authorized by an Emploi-Quebec agent before starting this program. To be eligible, you must meet one of the following conditions:
- You are receiving Employment Insurance benefits
- You have received Employment Insurance benefits within the last three years or within the last five years in the case of maternity or parental leave benefits
- You are receiving Social Assistance benefits
- You are not receiving any public financial support
Ministerial Requirements
A person who has received instruction considered sufficient by the college and meets one of the following conditions may be admitted to a program of studies leading to an Attestation d’études collégiales:
- the person’s studies have been interrupted for at least two consecutive terms or one school year; except in the case of an Emploi-Quebec sponsored program in which case it is 24-months.
- the person is covered by an agreement entered into between the college and an employer or by a government program of studies;
- the person has pursued postsecondary studies for at least one year
Program Requirements
The college considers sufficient instruction to be one of the following:

Quebec Secondary School Diploma (DES) or equivalent

Quebec Diploma of Professional Studies (DEP) or equivalent

A combination of experience and/or training deemed appropriate for the program.
English language skills equivalent to placement at Preparation for College English or higher. Applicants may be required to take an English placement exam.
Functional knowledge of oral French. Applicants may be required to take a French proficiency exam.
Applicants are required to submit a portfolio for application to the Video Game Level Design Program. Examples of content of portfolio are as follows:
- an original game level design or concept
- a critical analysis of a game or game level
- an original computer based game using tools such as, Flash, Gamemaker, RPG Maker
- an original non-digital game, e.g., table top game, board game, card-game, puzzle
- 3D built environments or architectural models
A selection interview will be required to assess the applicant’s readiness to pursue studies in the Program. Candidates should be prepared to demonstrate their:
- drawing ability
- creativity
- proficiency in working with computers
- oral skills in English and French
