Three new Career Advancement Credit Courses for interpreters and professionals in the social and health services

Introduction to Language & Cultural Interpretation (360-810-DW; 45 hours)

This 45-hour course will examine language and cultural Interpretation as a profession, with a focus on interpretation in the context of health and social services. Through a variety of readings, class discussions and case studies, the students will gain an understanding of the challenges and opportunities of interpretation in today's society in Canada and particularly in Quebec.

Start Date: May 1, 2013
End Date: June 26, 2013
Time: Mondays and Wednesdays, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Tuition Fee: $90 (plus administrative fees)

Aboriginal Communities in Canada (388-811-DW; 45 hours)

This 45-hour course will develop students' ability to understand the Aboriginal community's experiences in Quebec and Canada, and provides them with a basic understanding of issues surrounding Aboriginal peoples' health. It will introduce the concepts of social factors as related to Aboriginal peoples' wellness and culture and describe the laws and regulations governing their status, and affecting their health and socio-economic status.

End Date: June 20, 2013
Time: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Tuition Fee: $90 (plus administrative fees)

Immigration and Refugee Experiences in Canada (388-821-DW; 45 hours)

This 45-hour course is intended to help students relate to the needs and interests of immigrants and refugees in our society. It provides an overview of the workings of various Canadian and Quebec governmental institutions and the laws and regulations that govern immigration, both federally and provincially. The course will examine the public healthcare and social services network with a primary focus on Quebec's. Furthermore, the course will allow students to understand the experiences affecting new immigrants and refugees as well as their impact and ramifications on our society as a whole.

Start Date: May 10, 2013
End Date: June 8, 2013
Time: Fridays, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Saturdays, 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m.
Tuition Fee: $90 (plus administrative fees)
