Environmental Science (200.E2)

Do you care about the environment? Do you want to contribute to making a difference as a scientist in the health of our planet? Covering all the same science pre-requisites for university entrance as other Science profiles (Pure and Applied and Health) and with a focus on ecology, outdoor labs and stimulating field trips, Dawson’s Environmental Science Profile is your choice!

Highlighting the diversity and interconnectedness of living organisms and their importance in the ecosystem, Environmental Science is a two-year pre-university profile in the Science Program with an ecology tailored curriculum. Importantly, it provides students with a DEC in Science that qualifies them to apply to any university Science program.

What is special about the Environmental Science profile?

Though based on the Health Science Profile grid (for comparison, please consult the Science Program Brochure), the Environmental Science Profile distinguishes itself because:

  • The first Biology course (General Biology I) offers both ecology-based lectures and laboratory exercises focused on ecological interactions; many of these laboratory sessions occur outside a traditional lab environment;
  • The first two Chemistry courses in the profile (General Chemistry and Chemistry of Solutions) focus on environmental applications;
  • A new and exciting Environmental Biology course offers intensive laboratory sessions occurring at a Science field station;
  • In conjunction with the Environmental Biology course, an intensive Physical Education course has been developed and takes place at the same field station;
  • Field trips to other venues provide a well-rounded view of ecological and environmental diversity;
  • Students complete a special project on an Environmental Science topic;
  • Students attend a seminar series featuring speakers at the cutting-edge of many disciplines touching upon Environmental Science;
  • Certain specially-designed courses within the profile allow students to acquire a problem-based approach to learning.
