Dawson College D Discover

Objectives 2009-2010

The Academic Dean’s Objectives for 2009-2010 are framed primarily by the development of the new Strategic Plan as well as by on-going efforts to fulfill Dawson’s academic mission. The Academic Dean views the education of the student as a whole person as the focal consideration in student success and regards student success as a fundamental organizing element of the new Strategic Plan. The values inherent in this approach to student success should orient the entire College and will emphasize the institution’s need for action in all sectors and directorates of the College (i.e., Academic Sector, Student Services, Human Resources, Information Systems and Technologies, and Plant and Facilities).

To facilitate the engagement of students with faculty, with program activities and with College life, Dawson will explore opportunities to deliver curriculum in more effective and stimulating ways and make the student body more aware of the diversity of social and extra-curricular activities throughout the College. Teacher development is a keystone in all our educational efforts because teachers who are excited, engaged, and up-to-date in their pedagogical practices and knowledge are the primary agents to support student success. New clienteles and innovative orientations to programs and educational offerings will be pursued to create further options for students.

Education of the student as a whole person is at the core of the program approach which in turn relies on effective program delivery and, behind that, program management. The roles and responsibilities of program coordinators will be reviewed and situated within a broader context of college resources and systems (release, information and data management, promotion and marketing, efficiency and effectiveness in applications and admissions, tools for on-going evaluation, etc.). These diverse, but limited, resources will be coordinated to maximize support to programs.

At a systems level, student success requires the concerted and coordinated efforts of the academic sector as a whole and the commitment and collaboration of all the directorates within the College.

  1. Advance the action components of the 2009-2014 Strategic Plan, in particular efforts to implement and monitor the student success elements of the plan.
  2. Enhance support for program delivery and management.
  3. Pursue opportunities for innovative educational undertakings, for faculty and for students.
  4. Improve collaboration, consultation and communication within the academic sector and between it and other directorates in the College.
