At Dawson College, instructional development aims to help teachers improve their professional practices by providing individualized consultation and guidance on a range of pedagogical issues and topics.
If you are unfamiliar with the term
instructional development, you may find yourself familiar with one of the following terms, used synonymously in the academic world:
- Educational Development
- Academic Development
- Faculty Development
- Organizational Development or
- Staff Development
These terms, and the OID team are unified in their shared commitment to provide pedagogical support to teachers.
Program Implementation and Other Services
To promote effective program implementation, a key commitment of the Office of Instructional Development (OID) is to provide information and support for the integration of competency-based approaches in the classroom.
Beyond this, you may also arrange individual (or group) consultations to help you to:
- Create course frameworks and revise course outlines,
- Develop day-to-day learning activities,
- Teach to different learning styles
- Review student motivational techniques, and
- Integrate basic technology into your classroom.
If you would like feedback on your teaching, you can arrange to have a silent observer attend (or videotape) your class, in order to analyze your classroom practices. A discussion of these practices could help you to identify strengths and weaknesses, and also prepare you for themes that may arise in the context of a teacher evaluation.
All of these services are tailored to your professional needs and interests.
