Literary Themes

After taking one of these courses, students should be able to apply a critical approach to one or several literary themes. To this end, students will learn to recognize the treatment of themes and conventions, understand a work’s relationship to cultural contexts and analyze a representative work. To pass any English 103 course at Dawson College, students must demonstrate the following abilities:

Reading

  • Identifying one or more themes in a literary work
  • Understanding the literal meaning of the work studied
  • Recognizing ways in which stylistic, rhetorical, and formal features of the works
  • Contributing to the expression and development of a theme
  • Perceiving and appreciating the significance of historical and cultural contexts

Writing

  • Developing a literary analysis of a theme or themes within the works
  • Developing a critical analysis that is distinct from a personal reaction or plot summary
  • Locating supporting evidence within the literary work, presenting it clearly and logically, and explaining how the evidence supports the thesis
  • Maintaining unity and coherence throughout the essay.
  • Writing clear and error-free sentences
