What is the future of the family? These are sociological questions – questions about ourselves and society.

Sociology refers to the systematic study of social life. Sociologists explain human behaviour by relating it to the groups in which individuals participate. We all belong to many groups such as the family, occupational, religious, political and community groups. Sociologists study how these groups shape our beliefs and behaviour. The scope of sociology includes the study of the origins, nature and development of modern industrial societies and the social groups associated with these societies.

Why study sociology?

• Sociology focuses on contemporary social life. Anyone concerned with understanding modern life would find sociological perspectives essential.
• Sociology provides students with a solid background for courses in many different university programs along with valuable knowledge and training supporting a wide variety of career choices such as journalism, law, education, business, government service, and social work.
• The skills and abilities you develop in studying sociology contribute to your competitiveness in job markets. Employers are looking for flexible, broadly knowledgeable individuals, able to critically evaluate information, communicate effectively and work with others in team situations.
