Notice to the Research Community
Please be advised that, effective immediately, Dawson College has instituted a one-year moratorium on all new research studies conducted by external researchers.
The Research Ethics Board (REB), mandated by The Board of Governors, supports researchers in their mission to maintain ethical research conduct and instrumentation by ensuring that ethical guidelines derives from the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans and the Dawson College Policy on the Ethical Conduct of Research Involving Humans are respected.
Research ethics review is required for:
Researchers are asked to ensure that all fields in the application form are complete. If a field is not applicable to your project, please explain how that is the case. Incomplete applications will not be presented to the REB.
This checklist is meant as a guide to support researchers in applying to the REB at Dawson. Consent forms are not required to appear precisely like this template, but all sections and questions posed in this document must be considered in the development of a consent form.
Send complete application forms and all accompanying documents to:
Continuation or Closure of Research Study
Following the successful review of a project, ethics approval is granted for a period of one year. At the end of this one-year period, researchers are asked to submit either an Application for Renewal of Ethics Approval or a Research Study Closure Form (see links to these forms above). Please note that if you are planning to apply to have your ethics certificate renewed, the application must be received by the REB at least one month before the expiration date on your ethics certificate.
NB: What happens once my application is received by the REB?
Once an application for Ethics Review has been received, the REB will conduct a preliminary review to ensure it is complete, and determine whether it will go to a Full Board Review or Delegated Review.
Delegated Review is reserved for projects deemed to be of minimal risk, at the discretion of the REB.
Applications for Full Board Review are reviewed at regular scheduled meetings of the REB. See dates in the Important Dates section.
Applications for Delegated Review are reviewed by a small number of REB members outside of regular REB meetings.

The purpose of this log is keep the Dawson Community, as well as research communities in general, informed about active research projects involving Dawson students and staff. The log will be updated regularly in accordance with the decisions of the REB.
Research ethics review is required for:
1) Researchers (both Dawson researchers and researchers from other institutions) who wish to conduct research with human participants(students and/or staff) at Dawson College and,
2) Dawson Researchers, under the auspices of Dawson College, who wish to conduct research with human participants external to the College.
In unclear situations it is the REB's mandate to determine whether or not ethics review is required. While researchers are always responsible for ethical conduct in their research involving human participants, they have the support of the REB.
When in doubt, and to ensure ethical standards are upheld consistently, researchers are asked to present any project to the REB for a determination on whether or not ethics review is required.
Please send a detailed description of your projects to the Chair of the Research Ethics Board, by email:
This log records the ethics review status of research projects that have been presented to the Research Ethics Board at Dawson College. It will be updated as decisions are amde on new applications and as ethics review status changes. Some projects that have been reviewed by the REB may not appear in this log if a formal application was not required because ethics approval was not required. The log lists the researchers' name(s), the title of the project, the ethics review status of the application, and other pertinent information as determined by the REB.
It is important for the Dawson community to be informed about the research that is taking place at the College. By making the results of ethics review public, the REB aims to help protect researchers and research participants.
If you are a Dawson College student or employee and you are aware of an active research project involving human participants at Dawson College that does not appear on this log, please contact the Chair of the Research Ethics Board, Sasha Young by email email@example.com.
