{"id":606,"date":"2020-06-09T13:55:39","date_gmt":"2020-06-09T17:55:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dawsoncollege.qc.ca\/ai\/?p=606"},"modified":"2020-10-26T13:56:58","modified_gmt":"2020-10-26T17:56:58","slug":"update-from-dawsonai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dawsoncollege.qc.ca\/ai\/english\/update-from-dawsonai\/","title":{"rendered":"Update from DawsonAI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In April 2019, the Board of Governors of Dawson College approved\u00a0DawsonAI\u00a0Initiative:\u00a0\u00a0an ambitious, multi-faceted\u00a0three-year\u00a0strategic effort to\u00a0better prepare our students for a future which will be\u00a0increasingly\u00a0shaped by new technologies such as\u00a0<i>Machine L<\/i><i>earning<\/i>, the\u00a0<i>Internet of Things<\/i>, and\u00a0<i>Big Data<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The largest fraction of the\u00a0approved\u00a0financing is for the\u00a0DawsonAI\u00a0multi-disciplinary\u00a0Community of Practice.<i>\u00a0<\/i>CoP<i>\u00a0<\/i>Fellows\u00a0are faculty who meet regularly and collaborate on\u00a0developing portfolios of\u00a0teaching resources\u00a0in their discipline, which are focused on incorporating themes pertinent to the\u00a0DawsonAI\u00a0initiative\u00a0in\u00a0their\u00a0classrooms.<\/p>\n<p>The second most important part of the budget is focused on supporting the development of\u00a0applied research\u00a0expertise amongst faculty with respect to these same themes. The\u00a0DawsonAI\u00a0Research Fellowship is meant to support\u00a0faculty in research projects related to\u00a0domains such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fundamental or Applied research in AI<\/li>\n<li>Machine Learning<\/li>\n<li>Ethics of AI<\/li>\n<li>Computational Linguistics or Natural Language Processing<\/li>\n<li>Digital Humanities<\/li>\n<li>Computational Social Science<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Follow this link for the\u00a0Call for Proposals,\u00a0which contains\u00a0more details:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/AI-ResearchFellow2020\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/AI-ResearchFellow2020<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The ultimate objective of the\u00a0DawsonAI\u00a0initiative is to expose as many students as possible, in an as many ways as possible, to\u00a0how\u00a0data is\u00a0transforming every facet of\u00a0our lives at an unprecedented pace. The impact of social media platforms on democracy, algorithmic biases, digital surveillance,\u00a0AI and the Arts, the economics of automation,\u00a0computer vision, machine translation, augmented reality, learning analytics, biostatistics\u2026these are but a few\u00a0of the\u00a0new frontiers\u00a0where\u00a0Dawson faculty\u00a0may have research expertise.\u00a0Students will invariably benefit from such\u00a0a focused effort to systematically accelerate these\u00a0types\u00a0of research\u00a0projects.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0DawsonAI\u00a0initiative stands out from other similar projects at other institutions, because\u00a0of its focus on building the local capacity of our faculty so that the impact spreads beyond the traditional math, science, and computer science, disciplines.
