Abstract Expressionist Painting

Creative self-expression will be encouraged through the introduction of a variety of techniques which are influenced by the Abstract Expressionists. Inspired by Rothko, Frankenthaler, Motherwell, Pollock and others, students will be guided, through a dynamic experimental approach, to learn about colour mixing with acrylic paints, how to incorporate texture, expressive brushwork and elements of composition to create a series of abstract artworks.

Materials: Approx. $65 to $85

Bring to first class:
• Tubes or jars of acrylic paints – cadmium red medium, phthalo blue, cadmium yellow medium, black and white
• Canva-Paper pad or 2 canvas boards (minimum size 12 x 16)
• 3 – 5 brushes of various sizes 1/2” – 4” (inexpesive brushes available at hardware store)
• Roll of wax paper for palette or disposable palette pad
• Plastic palette knife, water spray bottle
• 2 containers for water, paper towels
• Plastic table cover

Additional materials required for subsequent classes:
• Variety of supports: 10 – 12 canvas boards and/or stretched canvases, 2 – 4 unprimed canvases for stain panting canvas paper pad, mixed media pad, heavy card
• 3” – 4” wide paint roller(s) with tray
• Acrylic Glazing Liquid (matt or gloss) or Gloss Medium or similar
• Texture medium, masking tape, hair dryer
• Variety of tools for applying and manipulating paint (to be discussed in class)
• Crafter’s Acrylic paints in assorted colours
• Additional acrylic paints (optional) burnt umber, yellow ochre, phthalo green, dark purple, cadmium orange, Payne’s grey
