English Conversation Workshop – Beginner level

Prérequis : (English follows) : Afin de pouvoir vous inscrire à l’atelier, vous devez déjà avoir complété un cours d’anglais langue seconde, de niveau débutant. Il n’est pas nécessaire d’être à l’aise de parler (puisque ceci est l’objectif de l’atelier), mais vous devriez au minimum : avoir mémorisé les nombres de 0-20 ; posséder un vocabulaire de base (la date, les 7 jours de la semaine, les 12 mois, les couleurs) ; connaître l’alphabet et être capable de lire des mots simples à voix haute, ainsi que de courtes phrases. Vous devriez également être familier avec : la conjugaison des verbes « avoir » et « être » au présent de l’indicatif ; quelques verbes importants qui représentent des actions quotidiennes ; et la structure de base d’une
phrase.
Prerequisites: Before registering to this conversation workshop, you must have already completed a Beginner course in English. You do not need to be at ease with speaking (as this is the objective of the present workshop), but you should at least: have memorized the numbers 0-20; possess basic vocabulary (the date, the 7 days of the week, the 12 months, the colors); know the alphabet and be able to read aloud simple words and sentences. You should also be familiar with: the verbs “to be” and “to have” in the present tense, a few important verbs representing daily actions, and the basic structure of a sentence.
Duration: 25 hours
Methodology:
This course will use a variety of learning techniques such as role play and discussions for oral fluency acquisition.

Material: There is no book required for this course. Photocopied material will be provided to students.

General Objectives:
This course aims to give students at the beginner level the opportunity to improve and practice their speaking and comprehension skills and to enrich their vocabulary.

Through role play and group discussions, students will be able to gain confidence as English speakers.
Emphasis will be placed on speaking skills and particular attention will be paid to the enrichment of both
vocabulary and idiomatic expressions.

The topics and subjects chosen are related to getting acquainted, family, health, shopping, food and restaurants, getting around (locations, directions, transportation), vacations and travel, everyday leisure activities, daily activities, and life in Montreal/Quebec. The course focuses on refining English skills already acquired. (Additional themes can be covered depending on the interests of the participants).

Specific objectives:
– Introducing and speaking about yourself, your family, and friends
– Knowing how to ask questions and answer them affirmatively or negatively, in different situations
– Expressing your interests and opinions in a simple way: what you like and what you don’t like
– Speaking in the present about your habits and daily activities
– Talking about past and future plans, travels, and leisure activities

Teaching methodology:
The course begins by introducing students to vocabulary enrichment and idiomatic expressions which
will assist them both in the conversations held in class and in their daily lives, including the use of :
-Authentic material (forms, menus, STM plan, clothing store flyers, recipes, etc.)
-Articles, short stories
-Video clips
