Diploma of Secondary Studies (DES), including:
- Secondary V Language of Instruction
- Secondary V Second Language
- Secondary IV Science
- Secondary IV Mathematics
- Secondary IV History
or academic background judged equivalent to the DES.
(Students with a DES missing any of the above subjects may be admitted, space permitting, but may be required to complete remedial courses.)

Letter of Intent – Deadline March 1st
(Upload your letter to the Admissions Portal and insert a printed copy in your portfolio).
Provide the following information:
Tell us a little more about yourself and your reasons for choosing our program. You may choose to respond to the questions outlined below.
- What made you choose to study interior design?
- Identify programs of study or individual courses you may have taken which indicate your relevant creative and/or technical skills.
- What aptitudes and abilities do you have that make you a good candidate for this program?
- What do you see yourself doing after completing the program?
- What are your professional goals after completing the program
Portfolio – Deadline March 1st
Assemble a portfolio consisting of 10 examples of creative work on 8.5” x11” paper format. Use photocopies or scans of your work as the portfolio will not be returned. Send your portfolio to the Dawson College Admissions Office. Digital Portfolios will not be accepted.
Submit freehand sketching from observation and drawing in pencil and/or ink as well as coloured works that demonstrate your unique strengths. You may also include photography (artistic or of any 3D work, for example, sculpture, fashion, furniture, jewellery), collage and graphics.
Focus on creativity, quality, personal expression, and variety in a well-organized format. This will help us evaluate your potential for success in the program.

All career/technical programs follow a set sequence of courses and therefore only accept applications to being in the Fall semester.
Career programs will only admit candidates for the fall term. You can still apply to the college for general education studies for the winter term.
CEGEP graduates are trained to work in the field as interior designers. They may also choose to continue on to university. The program provides a strong foundation for post-collegial studies.
Everyone has an opportunity to showcase their creativity and individuality. A carefully assembled portfolio showing variety in skills and creative work, shows the effort it takes to succeed. Grades and a good letter of intent count also for a lot in our admissions process.
Our aim is to teach you how to plan spaces and select colours, fabrics etc. therefore we recommend that you avoid showing us interior design projects.
I have good grades, but I haven’t practiced drawing or taken an art class. Do I have a chance to be admitted?
Yes. We acknowledge that not everyone has the same skills or creativity at this stage. We are ready to teach you these skills. This is why applicants are assessed on three categories: academics, letter of intent, and portfolio.
Letter of intent
A letter of intent is written by you, the applicant, to tell us why you are suited to the program and specifically to Interior Design as a future career.
The letter of intent tells us more about you than grades. We would like to know about your unique abilities, preferences or experiences related to the program.
