April 20: Engaging with the SDGs in Higher Education with Prof. Charles Hopkins

Students and staff are invited to attend a virtual inter-collegial talk entitled ‘’ Engaging with the SDGs in Higher Education with Prof. Charles Hopkins’’ on April 20 from 5:30-6:45pm. Charles Hopkins’ presentation will be about how we can incorporate the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in our college communities, from a student and staff perspective. According to the United Nations, ‘’The SDGs are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice.’’ Join John Abbott College in celebrating Earth Day by participating in this important discussion.

About the speaker
Charles Hopkins (York University, Toronto) holds the UNESCO Chair in Reorienting Education towards Sustainability. He coordinates a large network of teacher education institutions from over 70 countries supporting the implementation of the 2030 Global Education Agenda SDG 4. Hopkins is an advisor to UNESCO UNEVOC and the United Nations University and its network of Regional Centres of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). He serves as Co-Director of the Asia-Pacific Institute on ESD in Beijing (China). Having completed research indicating embedding sustainability issues into curricula in schools across 18 countries enhanced education quality in 2016, he launched a sequel research project in 2017 using ESD to improve the education and training of Indigenous youth. Internationally, Hopkins has a long relationship with education and sustainability and has played an important role as part of UNESCO’s effort to develop ESD.
