Learning from failure is a core component of education, however it is not often deliberately taught in secondary and CEGEP courses. There has been a dramatic increase in advice to “fail forward” and “fail fast”, however the corresponding structural and sustained supports are sometimes lacking. In this interactive session we will dive into the science of learning and explore what we know (and what we don't know) about how to support students in learning through failure. We'll look at innovative strategies for teaching students to embrace, learn from, and bounce back from failure in multi-disciplinary contexts, from pre-university to technical programs. We’ll also look at threshold concepts and misconceptions, and why learning from failure is key to comprehension and building knowledge - particularly as students navigate the transition into CEGEP and prepare for university or the workforce.
