{"id":89,"date":"2015-04-01T17:30:34","date_gmt":"2015-04-01T17:30:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dawsoncollege.qc.ca\/research\/?page_id=89"},"modified":"2025-12-03T11:55:44","modified_gmt":"2025-12-03T16:55:44","slug":"frequently-asked-questions","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.dawsoncollege.qc.ca\/research\/approval\/frequently-asked-questions\/","title":{"rendered":"Frequently Asked Questions"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>General<\/h2>\n\n        <style>\n\n        <\/style>\n\n\t\t<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"what-is-the-definition-of-research\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>What is the definition of research?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<p>For the purposes of the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans, Canada\u2019s national framework for research ethics, research is defined as &#8220;an undertaking intended to extend knowledge through a disciplined inquiry or systematic investigation.&#8221; (TCPS 2, 2022).<\/p>\n<p>There are many types of activities that can be classified as \u201cresearch\u201d and there are no definitive criteria for distinguishing a research project from one that simply resembles research.This determination can only be made on a case by case basis, but is necessary to ensure the highest standards of integrity and ethical conduct.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"what-is-the-tri-council-what-is-its-role-in-canadian-research\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>What is the Tri-Council? What is its role in Canadian research?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<p>The Tri-Council is composed of Canada\u2019s three federal funding agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).<\/p>\n<p>The Tri-Council has laid out the ethical guidelines and procedures for research, and publishes guidelines governing the financial administration of federal grants.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"who-makes-decisions-about-research-at-dawson\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>Who makes decisions about research at Dawson?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<p>The Academic Dean is the highest authority in the College with overall responsibility for research. S\/he is ultimately responsible for all decisions relating to policy, procedure or ethical conduct in research.<\/p>\n<p>On a day-to-day basis, the Dean of Academic Development and the research officer manage and decide most matters pertaining to research.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"i-have-a-question-about-research-who-can-i-talk-to\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>I have a question about research, who can I talk to?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawsoncollege.qc.ca\/research\/contact-information\/\">research officer<\/a> is available to answer any questions you may have about conducting research at Dawson.<\/p>\n<p>If you are not sure whether or not your project is classified as \u201cresearch,\u201d please submit a brief description of your project, along with any existing documentation, to the research officer in the Office of Academic Development. The research officer will review your project and return with their assessment shortly thereafter.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2>Research Grants<\/h2>\n<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"i-want-to-apply-for-a-research-grant-from-a-federal-or-provincial-agency-what-should-i-do-first\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>I want to apply for a research grant from a federal or provincial agency. What should I do first?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">The first step is to get your ideas down on paper. All grant proposals include the following sections:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>What is the problem you want to solve; or what is the question you want to answer? For example \u201cDoes using language-learning iPad apps in French as a Second Language class improve student grades and motivation?\u201d or \u201cWhat is the environmental impact of the disposal of plastic water bottles?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Why is this problem or question significant and important?<\/li>\n<li>How will you solve the problem or answer the question?<\/li>\n<li>Why is your solution better than what exists already?<\/li>\n<li>What concrete, specific steps or activities will you take to answer your question? You can write these as milestones with specific durations. E.g. Milestone 1: Collect and analyse existing data from community organisation (3 months)<\/li>\n<li>Why are you the ideal person to address this issue? Although priority is given to credited researchers who are funded through recognized research agencies (e.g., FRQ, NSERC, SSHRC, PAREA), the College tries to support other research efforts when there are sufficient funds to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Faculty researchers who wish to apply for research release must complete and submit the annual Teaching Release Application form. The form is made available at the beginning of each winter session by the Academic Dean\u2019s Office<\/p>\n<p>The Dean\u2019s Group will consider requests for release once funding competition results are announced.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h2>Research Ethics<\/h2>\n<p><strong>All questions related to research ethics should be submitted to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawsoncollege.qc.ca\/research-ethics-board\/\">Research Ethics Board<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"what-is-the-dawson-research-ethics-board-reb\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>What is the Dawson Research Ethics Board (REB)?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<p>The Research Ethics Board (REB) mandated by The Board of Governors, supports researchers in their mission to maintain ethical research conduct by ensuring that the following guidelines are respected:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ethics.gc.ca\/eng\/policy.html\"><strong>Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduction for Research Involving Humans<\/strong><\/a>,<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/frq.gouv.qc.ca\/politique-sur-la-conduite-responsable-en-recherche\/\">Politique sur la conduite responsable en recherche des FRQ<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawsoncollege.qc.ca\/wp-content\/external-includes\/spdocs\/documents\/acad-oad-03-policy-for-the-ethical-conduct-of-research-involving-humans.pdf\"><strong>Dawson College Policy on the Ethical Conduct of Research Involving Humans <\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For more information, please visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawsoncollege.qc.ca\/research-ethics-board\/\">Research Ethics Board<\/a> page or contact the REB coordinator.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"someone-has-asked-me-to-circulate-information-about-a-research-study-to-my-colleagues-students-for-purposes-of-recruiting-study-participants-am-i-permitted-to-do-so\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>Someone has asked me to circulate information about a research study to my colleagues\/students for purposes of recruiting study participants. Am I permitted to do so?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<p>Before considering circulating recruitment materials, you should request that the person provide information about the nature of the study, including his\/her Dawson REB certificate and letter of institutional approval.<\/p>\n<p>If you have any concerns, please contact the REB and the research officer.
