This could be writing op-eds, doing TED talks, advising think tanks, doing media interviews, and writing books that are accessible to the public.<\/p>\n<p>Before diving into analysis, let\u2019s define some terms. We can call academics who\u00a0<em>don\u2019t<\/em>\u00a0engage with the public, \u201ctraditional academics\u201d and academics who<em>\u00a0do<\/em>\u00a0engage with the public, \u201cpublic academics.\u201d I use the term \u201cpublic academic\u201d instead of \u201cpublic intellectual\u201d because public intellectuals can be\u00a0<em>outside<\/em>\u00a0of academia. For example, public intellectuals can be journalists, podcasters, writers, etc., with an intellectual approach. I want to focus on the distinction inside of academia.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional academics get annoyed by public academics for three main reasons: for selling out, wasting time or doing work that isn\u2019t serious.
