LJS Trip to National Assembly 2019

April 2nd, 2019

Students from the Law, Society and Justice Profile will visit the National Assembly in Quebec City. Students will observe Question Period, and meet with members of all Quebec political parties. During these activities, students will have a Profile lunch together in Quebec.

The trip relates directly to the theme of the Profile in that students will see how laws are made and discussed in Quebec as well as introducing them to how the laws are made (and by whom). Students in the LSJ profile tend to have have a strong interest in law and politics, and this trip gives them a direct opportunity to observe these significant institutions.

Project Update

Fifteen Law, Society & Justice students and two political science teachers spent the day at the National Assembly of Quebec. After a tour of the Assembly, learning about the architecture, symbolism, and history of the Assembly, students had the opportunity to meet with three members of the Liberal caucus over lunch, and discuss life in politics, the political issues of the day, and how to create a petition to be submitted to the National Assembly. After lunch, we attended Question Period, where we witnessed vigorous debate over the Government's proposed 'Laicity' legislation. Finally, students met for an hour with Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, Quebec Solidaire House Leader and Critic for Higher Education. We had an open and frank discussion on a variety of matters, including Quebec sovereignty, the role of protest and violence in political change, language and minority rights, and the significance of public and private education in Quebec.
