North South Trip to Cuba

December 28th, 2018 - January 17th, 2019

North South Studies is a social science profile that teaches about the intricate relationship between countries of the Global North and those of the Global South. It does so from a multidisciplinary perspective, giving students the opportunity to explore the social, political and economic structures that generate and perpetuate poverty and inequality in the world. Through courses and a weekly seminar all NSS students engage in learning about the present world order and the social and environmental implications of it.

Project Update

In NSS long tradition of solidarity with the South, this year after traveling to Nicaragua for more than 20 years we embarked on our first trip to Cuba. The group of nine students and three teachers were in Cuba for three weeks. We had the opportunity to visit Havana as well as rural areas of Cuba. Through our visit, we learned about Cuba’s history, the economic struggles inflicted by the embargo, the emerging environmental and social challenges facing the island, the present political processes taking place in the island and had the chance to enjoy Cuba’s rich cultural life.  Through a partnership with the Centro Memorial Martin Luther King, we connected with several social projects.
