The process, facilitates sharing and rescuing knowledge for the common good and for our planet.

More than a year and a half ago, two students from the UPN Sede Ayala, Dalia Susuqui Arenas Sánchez and Nayeli García Tapia started their educational intervention project in the community of Huitchila, Tepalcingo, Morelos. They arrived at the community with the hope of using their knowledge to support the foundation of a group that would work for the improvement of the living conditions of its members. Huitchila was a fertile land, where their training as agents of community development supported the foundation of the group “La Esperanza”, a group of women of different ages who meet with the objective of learning to work as a group and to learn about the use of medicinal and aromatic plants found in their community.

Giving her first workshop on medicinal plants

Dalia and Nayeli have facilitated a group integration process starting from encouraging cooperative work for the recovering of local knowledge about medicinal plants and they have mobilized an important sector of the community to understand, value and use these natural resources for their own well being and that of the community.

The women that form the group “La Esperanza” get together every Tuesday afternoon. A lot of them already knew about the plants that are found in the community. This knowledge, which they received from their grand-mothers and mothers was latent in them. However, they have now learnt to value it and have looked for ways to expand their knowledge and to keep it alive. They have participated in training workshops, visits to the university and have gone outside of their community and have put in practice what they have learned together: to make ointments, agro-biological products, to cultivate their own medicinal plants in a spiral orchard. The experience and conviviality with others has taught them about compost, vermi-composting and other environmentally friendly practices.

Building collectively the medicinal plants spiral orchard

A key result of their experience has been valuing team work. Each one of them are house wives and have had to overcome barriers to participate every Tuesday. In a context where women are not used to take time for themselves and with an endless list of house chores, they have procured this space for themselves. Today, they enjoy each other’s company and feel valued by the other members of the group. –Everyone is an important piece- said one of them during an interview. This project has given them a space for conviviality, friendship and for enjoying collective work. This could be the most radical and significant impact for sustainability. No one has the knowledge and strength to face the challenges that sustainability presents by ourselves. Sustainability requires cooperation.

There are many lessons that this experience leaves us. This initiative has generated and shared knowledge about medicinal plants among the participants and has given access to important resources for healthcare in a community where there is scarcity of medical services. The process has also supported the development of education in the area of environmental culture with a sector of the population that lacks ways to get environmental education and training.

Through this intervention project, the university has not only opened its doors to the community but has also integrated itself in it and facilitated a process for the recovering community knowledge and sharing it. Through this the UPN learns and teaches how to build communities that coexist harmoniously with their surroundings.

The title of Dalia and Nayeli’s work is: “Cooperative work through the use and recognition of the medicinal plants with women in the community of Huitchila, Tepalcingo, Morelos”

Group “La Esperanza”

Blog based on a collective interview with Dalia, Nayeli and members of the group “La Esperanza”, on July 13, 2017 in Huitchila.

Por Gisela Frías (Dawson College) English follows La Universidad Pedagógica Nacional, por medio de su licenciatura de Intervención Educativa, en el área de Educación para jóvenes y adultos fortalece el vínculo entre la academia y las comunidades rurales.
