Campuses Forum at Dawson College

By Luisa Montes

It was raining at dawn, the cold wind turned the drops of rain into crystals, spring in Montreal is different from the eternal spring of Cuernavaca Morelos, two cities that have many things in common, and this week they meet to talk about sustainability in schools .

Dawson College commemorates Earth Day every year, carrying out a series of activities for a week. In this framework and for the second year it has included the participation of the Sustainable Campuses Initiative: Sharing our knowledge. Dawson College representatives were joined by representatives of the UPEMOR, UPN Morelos and the Preparatoria Comunitaria de Tres Marías of the UAEM who are partners in this project for the last 4 years.

We started by sharing a morning coffee and expectations about the week to come. Gisela Frías, general coordinator of the project welcomed us, also explained a change in the agenda. We would not go out for birdwatching in the Peace Grden. Cold and rain prevented it, but that was not enough reason not to learn about them. Chris Adam, Coordinator of the Sustainability office, gave us a talk about birds; heirs of ancient times on earth.

The official inauguration was in charge of Max Jones, who is the Assistant Dean Social Science and Technologies. After a cordial welcome he spoke of the importance of coming together to think together, decide and act together in favor of sustainability in the campuses and especially, to find together the path to a common well-being for all.

During the event, they were present at Dawson College; Max Jones, from the Social Sciences program, Gisela Frías PES coordinator, Chris Adam coordinator of the Office of Sustainability, Susie Bouchard from the internationalization office, Tina Romero from the Student Success program, Catherine McWhaw from the quality control office, Sarah Cartier of the CRLT program, Salma Hamdani professor of psychology and the Mexican delegation, composed of Casandra Venegas de Upemor, Laura Hernández and Jorge Viana of the Community Preparatory School of Tres Marías, Dr. Ruth Bustos of the UPN Morelos and Luisa Montes of Green Cities.

It was exciting to listen to Brenda Lee, who has volunteered for some years at the College to care for and protect monarch butterflies; He told us about his experiences and shared his learning with us, but, especially, he infected us with his love for these insects, which are also a metaphor of union between our countries and an example of resilience for our peoples. We can all do something for them and time for all of us.

Afterwards, we walked through Conrods and visited the Eco café organized by three students from the College who collect funds to support sustainability projects at UPN and UPEMOR where they will do their internship soon. It was inspiring to see the enthusiasm and the work done. Thank you very much Sophie, Rachel and Abigail. We also met Benoit Daoust from INSECTO who enthusiastically told us about his project and research on feeding ourselves with insects and how this strategy gives a healthy life, favors the environment and contributes to a common well-being.

Time to walk in the company of Chris Adam to learn about some of the sustainability projects that exist on campus. It was very interesting to see the project board and then go out into the corridors to see them converted into reality.

Along the way, we had the opportunity to talk with students representing the student union who gave us a few minutes to talk about the important projects they have put into action. Thus came the time to share food with students who have or will do an internship with us in Mexico. I do not know why but all this reminds me of monarch butterflies.

[9

post-1887","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-forums
["GET
