Nature is wise but unpredictable; We still have a long way to understand its language. Thus, it was difficult to Mexican to assimilate that that same day, at 13:14:40, the earth moved once again; this time the epicenter was at 18.40 latitude north, 98.72 longitude west, at a depth of 57 kilometers, at 12 kilometers southeast of Axochiapan, in the state of Morelos and with a magnitude of 7.1 on the Richter scale.

The earthquake, at a normal fault line and intermediate depth had a high frequency, causing damage to both buildings and non-structural components. There were human, material and patrimonial losses. Thousands of families lost loved ones, their homes and employment. Morelos was one of the most affected areas and a state of emergency was declared in its 33 Municipalities.

Personal del CECAM de Upemor entregando enseres de cocina en la comunidad de Tetela del Volcán

An event like this awakes solidarity and global support. Immediate help was required, but especially help was needed after the emergency, when we saw the reality of the conditions under the rubble, behind the hurdles, once the fright had passed. News traveled fast and so did the help, including that of Dawson College, an educational community with which the UPN Morelos, Upemor and the UAEM have shared a path to sustainability for four years through the Sustainable Campuses Initiative, coordinated by Dr. Gisela Frías in Montreal and Environmental Engineer Paulina Moguel in Mexico.

Distance did not diminish the will to help and collaborate. On the contrary, it fueled diverse and feasible ways to do it. Dawson College generated actions to collect funds, the UPN Morelos, Upemor and the Tres Marias Community Preparatory School put their hands in action to help their own people and strangers too. Students and teachers from the different schools had been affected directly or indirectly and to different extents. This initiative received financial support from the academic and student community of Dawson College and the Sustainable Campuses Initiative. It provided for donations of food, water and cleaning materials, as well as basic cooking utensils. The delivery took place on March 6, 2018 in the facilities of the UPN Galeana benefiting about 18 families in the southern area of Morelos.

On the other hand, inhabitants of the Altos de Morelos lost houses, schools, shops and religious sites. In the indigenous communities of the municipality of Tetela del Volcán, such as Hueyapan, Ocuituco, Jumilpetec among others, which are all small rural towns, 60 percent of the houses built of adobe were turned into rubble and 48 hours later some were dragged by landslides caused after intense rains subsequent to the earthquake. Men and women, mostly elderly, sought to recuperate some of their belongings and start again. This required extra hands.

Personnel of the Center for Environmental Training, Management and Sustainability (CECAM) belonging to Upemor, went to the head of the Municipality of Tetela del Volcán, where at least 1,900 families lost their homes. There, governmental and non-governmental programs had been created to build ecological houses using plastic bottles and wooden pallets. The CECAM delegation with knowledge about construction and in collaboration with government officials delivered the aid provided by the Dawson College community and Sustainable Campuses Initiative. This allowed them to get to know closely the reality of the families and a moment of conviviality. The aid consisted in the delivery of cooking utensils. The emergency had caused the excessive use of styrofoam. The families were grateful to receive the support and valued the opportunity to avoid the consumption of materials that are harmful to the environment.

Equipo de Cecam apoya en la construcción de casas ecológicas en apoyo a las familias afectadas en Tetela del Volcán

Children were affected in various ways. The emotional wellbeing of the children became a social priority. Psychological aid was set in motion, and artistic and cultural activities were reproduced everywhere seeking to inject hope and optimism in the midst of that complicated reality.

After having been provided support during this difficult grieving process, the children gradually returned to their normal activities in spaces conditioned for teaching. They received information and education on how to act in the event of contingencies. Children were a key element in the organization of their communities. In Ocuituco, toys were given to 70 first grade children from the primary school on March 18. The school’s policy did not allow for pictures to be taken for the protection of minors, but we assure you there were plenty of smiles. In the town of Hueyapan, toys were given to 30 children from the community who had not yet returned to their schools. Part of this delivery was possible thanks to the solidarity of Dawson College, who demonstrated its friendship and empathy with our indigenous communities in Morelos, the Comité Carlota van Schouwen of Montreal, the logistical support of the Instituto para el Desarrollo de Ciudades Verdes and the tireless work of the Patiño Morales family and Flores Tapia from Ocuituco and Hueyapan respectively, and many other solidarity arms that joined in the tasks of removing debris and reconstruction that are still in process today.
