Mexico March 28, 2016

Reaping smiles

Four years into the project to create Sustainable Campuses, we were able to attend the harvest of smiles at preschool “Heroes of 47” in the rural community of Tepetzingo, in the municipality of Emiliano Zapata. Ths is where Yéssica Lizbeth Vergara, undergraduate student in Educational Intervention at the National Pedagogical University, headquarters Cuernavaca, Morelos, did her social service, which involved to transform the preschool into a sustainable school, with the participation of the school community and with the support of Inspira, a civil association that promotes the transformation of schools and public spaces to make them generators of peace and harmony through youth volunteer work.

During the session that took place at the preschool, as part of the activities of the Second Itenerant and Binational Forum “Science, art and tradition for sustainability” it was possible to harvest many smiles and promote hopes as we could witness the achievement of one of the main goals of the project, to promote sustainability in campuses wehre teachers and educational intervenors are trained for their potential as multipliers in their areas where they intervene.

This session of the forum allowed us to observe that an educational intervenor is able to impact the entire school community and its environment.

This day the forum saw how smiles emerged from children and filled with joy those involved in the collective work of building a dream and to those who witnessed this experience and were filled with hope and inspiration to share this experience across borders spreading it everywhere.

It was a great satisfaction to receive together the harvest, sharing the joy among those of us who participated in the first stage of this project: Dawson College, Earth Values Institute, Ciudades Verdes A.C. , teaching staff and students from the UPN and UAEM, and those who continue to join this initiative: a delegation from Dawson College including three students who spent hours of their internship creating sustainability in this preschool.

In a cordial atmosphere where you could taste the fruit of collective work and solidarity, in which the strength of the community social fabric, built on the basis of a shared dream, the fifth session of the Forum filled us with joy. It showered us with hope and it challenged us to share the seeds harvested and spread to other areas that require educational interventions as performed by our beloved sawer of smiles, Yéssica Lizbeth Vergara.

Undoubtedly Yessi’s project germinated thanks to the fact that it was supported by management, represented by Laura Cecilia Pardo Morquecho, a great human being who practices her values on a day to day basis with the children and who has managed to work hand in hand with her teaching staff, support staff and a sensational group of parents, grandparents and neighbors of the town.

During the event, the theater group The Heart of the Canyon who represented their work by the same name. It drew applause from old and young. We were also delighted by the delicious food we shared in a now green campus, where the swallows and their nests have a place as part of the educational environment, where you can still hear the song of the mockingbird and observe migrant birds that travel between Mexico and Canada, where there are spaces for play and coexistence, in short, where you can observe the important steps taken towards sustainability, worthy to be taken as an example to follow if you want to realize shared dreams for life in all its expressions.

By Margarita Hurtado, Ciudades Verdes S.C.
