The forum was an opportunity for members of the “Sustainable Campuses Initiative” to collectively learn about different experiences taking place not only in Mexico but also throughout Latin America and to share our knowledge with others.

The forum was organized by the UAEM (Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos) and PROGAU (University Environmental Management Program at the UAEM) as part of the fourth meeting of the Alliance of Ibero-American Universities’ Network for Sustainability and the Environment (ARIUSA). A large number of oral presentations and academic posters academic several important areas of knowledge related to processes for integrating sustainability into the mission, curricular activities, and research and university management.

The Sustainable Campuses Initiative participated with two oral presentations and a poster. Dr. Gisela Frias from Dawson College briefly introduced this action-research project with a focus on the results related to the processes that support the transformation of an educational community for sustainability. The presentation stressed the importance of recognizing the role played by different members of the educational community as change agents to support sustainability processes. She called to recognize the importance of breaking power relationships within the educational community, and facilitating the contribution that committed teachers, empowered students and an administration that is flexible and open to taking risks,

Jorge Dominguez from the National Pedagogic University (UPN) Cuernavaca in collaboration with Gloria Rodriguez from the Galeana campus participated with the presentation “The road to a sustainable community.” The presentation provided a reflection on the experience of the UPN as they move towards sustainability, focusing on the richness and complexity of “bottom up” processes. The Polytechnic University of the State of Morelos (UPEMOR) was also present at this forum. Teacher and coordinator of the Center for Environmental Training (CECAM) of the UPEMOR, Valeria Davila Solano, in collaboration with Jiovana López-Pérez, J. Antonio Hernández-Martínez, and Mireya Gally-Jorda presented “The UPEMOR on the road to sustainability contributes to mitigating climate change”. Dr. Juan Salvador Nambo in collaboration with Dr. Veronica Giles Chavez and Rubicelia Moctezuma Sanchez, also of the UPEMOR presented the poster “Sustainable Campuses Networks: An action research experience between Mexico and Canada”.

The forum provided an opportunity for a team of students and teachers of the UPN, UPEMOR and Dawson College and members of Ciudades Verdes to participate in the event as audience. We listened carefully to each of the presentations and during lunch we had the opportunity to collectively reflect on some of the topics discussed. The forum shared a wealth of experience from institutions of Higher Education throughout Latin America, from small colleges and other “mega” universities, technical and teaching universities, and urban and rural institutions, all with the purpose of moving towards sustainability. The experience enriched us as a team and we hope to have made a small contribution to the reflection of all participants.

<figure id="attachment_434"
