I decided that I\u00a0had nothing to lose and I entered the world of UDL.<\/h2>\n<p><strong>In physical education<\/strong>, like many\u00a0other disciplines, we\u00a0have students that are entering into Dawson with a wide range of knowledge. Students graduating from\u00a0high school are not entering into CEGEP with the same base knowledge as they\u00a0would have for\u00a0mathematics, sciences,\u00a0French\u00a0or\u00a0English. There are no\u00a0provincial or standardized tests that students must complete before entering the college.\u00a0\u00a0The result\u00a0is, a box of chocolate,\u00a0\u201cyou never know what you\u2019re\u00a0gonna\u00a0get\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>With all groups being so unique I found myself teaching to only a portion of the student body leaving the rest behind. It was either you pick up the pace or you will fall behind. <strong>This was not\u00a0fair to my students nor was it fair to me.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I decided <strong>to\u00a0take action<\/strong>\u00a0and focus my attention towards <strong>UDL<\/strong> to build a more inclusive environment and pedagogy for my students.\u00a0Rather than beginning with one specific course title, I decided to focus on implementing\u00a0various strategies and teaching tools to all my courses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The objective of said tools and\u00a0strategies were to:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduce the obstacles in learning<\/li>\n<li>Increase student engagement<\/li>\n<li>Provide more options to students<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>With an interest in technology I\u00a0began reformatting my courses to be:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Easily accessible<\/li>\n<li>More engaging<\/li>\n<li>More inclusive<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I cannot say for certain due to the current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic <strong>but I believe\u00a0my strategies implemented into my courses have leveled the playing field and will\u00a0continue\u00a0to do so as there is so much work we can do.<\/strong> This project\u00a0is only one stage of the journey, there are plenty of more stages to reach before I get to the end.<\/p>\n<h4>Read more:<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawsoncollege.qc.ca\/udl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/160\/UDL-Project.pptx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UDL Project: one stage of the journey<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prior to joining the Dawson 2019 UDL Cohort, I had limited knowledge to what Universal Design for Learning was.\u00a0It was my first full-time post during the\u00a0day\u00a0and I wanted to get my toes wet.
