{"id":3,"date":"2017-02-13T14:40:47","date_gmt":"2017-02-13T14:40:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dawsoncollege.qc.ca\/udl\/home\/"},"modified":"2025-04-24T15:54:48","modified_gmt":"2025-04-24T19:54:48","slug":"what-is-universal-design-for-learning","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.dawsoncollege.qc.ca\/udl\/what-is-universal-design-for-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Universal Design For Learning?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>A UDL journey<\/h2>\n<p>We are very pleased to share our journey with <strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">UDL, Universal Design for Learning<\/span>.<\/strong> This pedagogical model has empowered our teaching, and our feeling of doing something good in our classes, for almost five years now.<\/p>\n<h2>Variability is the norm!<\/h2>\n<p>Learner variability is the norm in our classrooms. Students can benefit from deeper learning and greater engagement if we design courses and learning activities with this in mind.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, students haven\u2019t changed a lot; the society we live in has. Our technological environment has impacts on all our lives, personal and professional. Added to this reality, the knowledge of the brain that we have today is much more accurate than before, even if we are still far from understanding everything.<\/p>\n<h2>Remove the barriers<\/h2>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-511\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawsoncollege.qc.ca\/udl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/160\/Slide1-1.jpg\" alt=\"Common barriers to learning,Greater cognitive effort,Fatigue,Anxiety, Information processing, Organisational difficulties,Reading difficulties, Oral communication\" width=\"329\" height=\"247\" \/>\n<p>In this context, we need to <strong><span style=\"color: #568dc4\">rethink our classroom<\/span>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawsoncollege.qc.ca\/udl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/160\/Pratiques-pe\u0301dagogiques-CUA-copy.pdf\">Pratiques pe\u0301dagogiques CUA<\/a><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And that is where <span style=\"color: #568dc4\"><strong>UDL<\/strong><\/span> makes us realise that what is helpful for one student can be helpful for anyone in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is to recognize all possible barriers in our teaching in regards to the learning process and then to make them disappear, in order <span style=\"color: #568dc4\"><strong>to reach ALL students.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>UDL principles<\/h2>\n<p>The table below represents the <strong><span style=\"color: #568dc4\">three means of the model<\/span>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawsoncollege.qc.ca\/udl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/160\/Les-compositions-progressives-en-franc\u0327ais-langue-seconde-21-copy.docx\">Les compositions progressives en fran\u00e7ais langue seconde<\/a><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When we start to think about our course and the way we teach, we often find out that we already apply a lot of good practices.<\/li>\n<li>The concept of multiple means (<span style=\"color: #568dc4\"><strong>Engagement, Representation<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #568dc4\"><strong>Action &amp; Expression<\/strong><\/span>)\u00a0 enables us to approach our teaching with a wider vision, that of inclusion, without lowering academic standards. Experiencing vulnerability, <span style=\"color: #568dc4\"><strong>discomfort <\/strong><\/span>&#8230; not always an easy process! <span style=\"color: #568dc4\"><strong>Creativity<\/strong><\/span>, yet another challenge: listening to our students, a key component in this process.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #568dc4\"><strong>Thinking out of the box<\/strong>,<\/span> a necessary step towards the shift of paradigm and the embracing of an inclusive pedagogy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A UDL journey We are very pleased to share our journey with UDL, Universal Design for Learning.
