Periodic Table Coloring Book

March 1st - 31st, 2018

A 100 page children coloring book showcasing the first 100 elements of the periodic table of chemical elements. Each page has, on top of the chemical symbol and number of the atom, a black and white line art illustrating few applications of the element. The digital version of the Periodic Table Coloring Book will be downloadable for free online.

Students from the Illustration & Design program will create the line-art accompanying the 100 elements of the coloring book. Third year students will chaperon first and second year students in the creation process.

In addition to learn some chemistry fun facts, the Illustration & Design students will exercise their skills for the creation of an artifact (a coloring book) directly related to their field of study, but that is not covered in their program. These students will be exposed to the reality of fabricating a professional final product respecting short deadlines.

Project Update

At the forefront of Active Learning strategies in the STEAM disciplines, the Chemistry Department and Illustration & Design Department initiated a collaborative out of class project to create a palpable introduction to the building blocks of matter for kindergarten children. Together, they created a Periodic Table Coloring Book illustrating the first 118 elements of Mendeleev's table. In an internationally accessible format, each page displays only the atomic number and symbol of an element, in addition to a few black & white outlines representing an example of its real-world application
