SALTISE’s 4th annual conference to be held at John Abbott College on June 2, 2015

Active learning is a response to the classic student question: “Why do we have to learn this?” or its closely related cousin: “Will this be on the test?”. SALTISE is a symbiotic community of developers and users of active learning pedagogies. SALTISE provides resources – human and material – for the development or implementation of active learning in Quebec. The annual conference provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and information on the application of theory and development of best practices related to active learning.

This year’s theme is: Inspiring Learning, Leveraging Evidence: Changing Models for Designing Instruction. The Conference is expected to attract more than 200 university and college faculty, staff, professionals and administrators; and, graduate students. These individuals come from a diversity of disciplines and interests including, but not limited to: education, science, social science, professional development, educational ITC personnel, teaching assistants, and educational suppliers.

Participate in a summer camp in China

The Confucius Institute in Quebec is providing CEGEP students with the opportunity to enjoy a summer camp in China from August 1-15, 2015. This is a cultural exchange so you must have knowledge of Canadian and Quebec culture to take part in this camp. Students are responsible for the cost of their flight and medical insurance but the Confucius Institute is paying for two weeks room and board as well as all transportation in China.

The deadline to apply is May 30, 2015.

Attention returning day students

Your regular full-time student fees ($170) for the Fall 2015 semester have now been assessed and are required to be paid in full by June 5, 2015.  Please note that you  will not be able to register for Fall 2015 until these fees and any other outstanding fees are paid in full.

If you are not planning to return for Fall 2015, please go to the REGISTRAR’s office in room 2D.6 to complete a form requesting the cancellation of your Fall 2015 semester.  This is a required procedure in order to cancel your invoiced amounts for Fall 2015.

New students will be able to pay their invoices from June 8 to June 30.

English Exit Test is on Wednesday, May 13th

If you have registered for the English Exit Test, it will take place exclusively on Wednesday, May 13th. If you have received a confirmation indicating that it is on May 14th, please disregard this information. A confirmation letter has been sent to you by mail, if you have not received your letter, you may get a copy by presenting yourself to 4B.3A.

Dawson students win again at the Quebec Entrepreneurship Contest!

It is with great pleasure that the Dawson College Centre for Innovation & Entrepreneurship announces a win for our students at the Quebec Entrepreneurship Contest! This is the 2nd year in a row Dawson students have been honoured with a prize.

Eweek’s Dawson Den finalist Meghan Dove Designs represented the college as the winner of a $2000 grant from Desjardins. Meghan was chosen for her educational social network project ‘Ped Day’, an application for schools that combines the best of Facebook groups, LinkedIn and Omnivox, and is intended to unite and improve the education experience of students across programs, schools, the country and around the world.  Continue reading

Research in Numbers: Dawson Mathematics Department Providing Unique Learning Opportunities for Students

The Science Program has been putting a strong effort in providing students with out of class learning activities of various formats and from all departments.

The Dawson Mathematics department has led the charge in recent years, hosting several events including the Dawson Weekly Mathematics Challenge (started in 2009), which provides students with challenging weekly problems from many different areas of mathematics that help students improve their problem solving skills, the Dawson Annual Mathematics Competition (started in 2007), as well as getting students involved in External Math Competitions from other organizations and universities. Environmental students head to Mexico for a sustainability internship

This summer, four students from Dawson’s environmental profiles in both sciences and social sciences will embark on a six week internship to two Universities in the State of Morelos, Mexico to share ideas about sustainability and learn new practices. While in Mexico, they will work on the day to day maintenance of existing projects at the Universities and upon their return, they will share their new knowledge with the students and faculty at Dawson. However, to make this cross cultural exchange of knowledge and sustainable values possible they need your help, whether this be through giving a donation or spreading awareness! All the money collected from this campaign will be used to support student driven sustainability initiatives in Mexico. The students in Cuernavaca are very excited to connect with the Canadian interns, sharing knowledge, experiences, and working together to create a sustainable future. Peace Lecture Series – The Five Laws of Violence

On Wednesday, April 29, 2015 the Dawson Centre for Peace Education is proud to host James Loney, author of Captivity: 118 days in Iraq and the Struggle for a World Without War, speaking on the topic: The Five Laws of Violence. A social worker specializing in body-based trauma healing, James Loney is a lifelong pacifist and survivor of a hostage-taking in Baghdad. He has worked with the Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) for nonviolent resolutions in conflict zones such as Iraq, Israel-Palestine, and between indigenous communities and the Canadian government. His book Captivity has been praised by Islamic Liberation Theologians, Rabbinic scholars, peace activists, writers, and Nobel Peace Prize nominees. Continue reading
