Colour Pencil and Drawing Fundamentals


This class will feature:

Drawing demonstrations, step-by-step guidance, varied exercises designed to explore the essentials such as:
proportion, construction, specific techniques to assist in creating depth and volume of basic shapes.

To enhance visual interest and intensity of your creations, you will be introduced to basic colour theory, value studies, blending and layering of colours.

We will also investigate why light and shadow play a key role in creating vibrant and unique artwork.

By the end of the course, your observational skills will have improved, along with your ability to create convincing forms, and apply nuanced colour, transforming simplistic sketches into compelling artworks.

Course Materials

  • 1 x Staedtler Mars Lumograph graphite pencil, hardness: B
  • Strathmore Bristol Vellum pad 11 x 14 inches
  • Kneaded eraser
  • White eraser – pen shaped

Colour pencils: Fabre-Castell Polychromos :

  • # 219 Deep scarlet red
  • # 181 Payne’s Grey
  • # 144 Cobalt blue-greenish
  • # 106 Dark cadmium yellow
  • # 176 Burnt umber

  • Blue tape (any hardware store) 1 or 2 inches wide
  • KUM long point Block sharpener, one hole (in store at Nota Benne) quality sharpener
  • Pale Masonite Panel – 3mm, 16 x 20 inch or 18 x 24 inch (available at Avenue des Arts in Westmount)
