Drawing Without Boundaries

“Drawing Without Boundaries” celebrates the liberating art of unrestrained creativity. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or a curious beginner, this approach encourages you to explore diverse materials, techniques, and subject matter to foster creativity and self-expression.

For the first class, bring the following materials:

  • Drawing pencils: HB, 2B, and 4B
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Drawing pad: 11” x 14”

Prerequisites or Prior Knowledge

None

Teaching & Learning Activities

  • Lesson One: Investigate the art of dynamic line through automatic drawing, blind contour drawing, gesture, and more!
  • Lesson Two & Three: Experiment with multiple mark-making techniques to describe shape, light, and shadow. The concepts of chiaroscuro and Notan will be introduced.
  • Lesson Four: Discover how to exploit a toned surface to express mass and form in a figure or portrait drawing.
  • Lesson Five: Explore the subtractive sketching method where your eraser becomes a drawing tool!
  • Lesson Six: Practice sketching with brush, ink, and water-based media.
  • Lesson Seven: Express your inner artist by bending the rules of composition and colour!
  • Lesson Eight: Unleash your creativity as you combine texture, pattern, and collage into an abstract drawing.

For this course, you will need:

  • Drawing pencils: HB, 2B, 4B, 6B
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Several sticks of compressed black charcoal
  • Several sticks of medium willow charcoal
  • Several sticks of compressed white charcoal or conte
  • Dry pastels
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Drawing paper
  • Charcoal paper
  • Toned paper
  • Watercolour paper
  • 4 large bulldog clips
