Your Take
Dawson through your eyesMiella Manjava (Social Science), Arina Capral (International Business) and Kyana Boncy (Mechanical Engineering Technology) placed third in the Green Innovation Challenge held at John Abbott College in January. PHOTO: JENNIFER DE VERA
These three Dawson students met for the first time the morning of Jan. 17 as participants in the Green Innovation Challenge at John Abbott College. They teamed up and were given the day to plan out a sustainability-related project that would benefit their community. Ultimately, they decided to build a green bike rack to be set up at Dawson and named their project "VeloSecure." Safety and security are enhanced through improved bike rack design and a solar-powered light source, and by installing the bike rack in a more accessible location.
Congratulations to these creative and adaptable students for tackling a real-world problem at Dawson -- the lack of a secure bike rack. As noted by Jenn de Vera of the College's Sustainability Office, "Hopefully their safer rack will encourage more students and employees to choose active alternative transportation to and from school/work knowing their bike and/or scooter will be safely locked up."
Kyana Boncy, a member of the team that conceived of the project and also a student in Mechanical Engineering Technology, will be further developing the plan and realizing the project in her Emerging Technologies course this semester. There are details to iron out relating to the location of the bike rack and heritage building rules, but we hope to see this innovative new bike rack installed on campus soon.
