Student murals add colour and creativity to Dawson club space
Dawson College’s hallways and club spaces have been refreshed thanks to Campus Creatives, a student-led initiative bringing original mural art to campus.
Launched by the Dawson Student Union (DSU), the project was designed to make the college feel more alive while giving students the chance to showcase their creativity on a large scale. “We wanted the school to reflect the artistic spirit of our students,” said Emilia Alina Tobar-Icaza, DSU Vice-President of Operations and Services.
Students were invited to submit mural proposals and designs were selected based on feasibility, aesthetics, and how well they complemented each space.
Among the featured works is Between Bloom and Bone, a colourful mural led by Health Science student Diana Yadegaritootshami. Inspired by her own experience balancing a passion for both science and art, Diana’s piece explores the idea that identity goes beyond the physical. “While humans are physically made of flesh, what truly defines us is our individuality, the ‘colour’ of our soul,” she said.
Her mural, created over five days with contributions from 15 students across three CEGEPs, most of them in science programs, highlights the connection between disciplines often seen as separate.
For Diana, who immigrated to Canada in 2019 and found her footing through art, the mural also represents a sense of belonging. “This mural at Dawson is my way of building a connection with this new environment.”
Other murals now brightening the campus include Abundance by Angela Maffei in the DSU office, The Little Prince by Eva Lee and Inês Dos Santos Afonso, The Broken Shell by Diana Yadegari, and Tiles by Daria Gladchii.
With most of the murals now complete and overwhelmingly positive feedback from students, the DSU hopes the project will continue.
