Celebrating Dawson’s permanent art collection
The Warren G. Flowers Gallery is celebrating the college’s permanent art collection through an upcoming exhibition that features artworks created by Dawson students between 1993 and 2026.
Many of these artworks may be familiar because they were gathered from around the campus (in hallways, offices, and classrooms). This exhibition sheds light on how the daily presence of visual art on campus reinforces our collective humanity while also providing a sense of creative possibility. We invite visitors to reflect on the insights revealed by these works, as well as the inherent art historical importance of this collection.
Selected artworks from The Myles Tyrrell Purchase Award, The Study Collection, and the printmaking archive will be exhibited in the gallery and the adjoining vitrines. Public programs, such as guided visits and pedagogical resources, will also be offered.
The Myles Tyrrell Purchase Award was initiated in 1991 by the Fine Arts Department in honour of a beloved long-time teacher. Myles Tyrrell taught sculpture and design in the Fine Arts Department for many years until his retirement. Annually, the acting Fine Arts Chairperson purchases an artwork from the Visual Arts graduating student exhibition. The collection now numbers over 30 artworks (paintings, drawings, sculptures, and prints).
The Study Collection comprises outstanding examples of student work that have been gathered for pedagogical purposes. Some of these works are donated by Visual Arts graduates when they return to the college as guest speakers or to exhibit their current work.
In the vitrine facing the upper atrium cafeteria, selected prints by Indigenous students will be featured. Highlighting artistic ingenuity, these works are featured together to amplify their voices, to encourage truthful listening, and to celebrate their inspiring expressions of resilience.
Exhibition dates: Oct. 7 to Nov. 16. The opening hours are 1 1 AM-7 PM, Monday through Friday.
Vernissage: Thursday, Oct. 8, 5-7 PM – all are welcome!
