Vigil held at Dawson for MMIWGT2S

February 22nd, 2023

The First People’s Centre organized a vigil in the Oliver’s student space at Dawson on Feb. 14 to commemorate the MMIWGT2S (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Trans and Two-Spirited.) There is an epidemic of violence against Indigenous women in Canada. The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls has reported that Indigenous women and girls make up 24 per cent of female homicide victims in Canada, despite only making up four per cent of the country’s female population.

The report cited research that “Indigenous women and girls are 12 times more likely to be murdered or missing than any other women in Canada, and 16 times more likely than Caucasian women. … Other than murder, statistics also reveal how Indigenous women consistently experience higher rates and more severe forms of physical assault and robbery than other groups in Canada. Sexual violence is a huge problem in all its forms: Indigenous women are sexually assaulted three times more often than non-Indigenous women, and most of the women and children trafficked in Canada are Indigenous.”

MMIWGT2S to be remembered on Feb. 14

February 8th, 2023

The red dresses currently hanging in the atrium are there in memory of the lives of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Trans, and 2 Spirited (MMIWGT2S) peoples across North America.

Several Dawson students, including Indigenous students working in collaboration with the First Peoples’ Centre, will be organizing an awareness-raising vigil on Feb. 14. Valentine’s Day, typically a day to show love to a significant other, was determined to be the best day for the annual awareness campaign by Indigenous communities. The day is an opportunity to show love to those affected by such violence and to raise awareness of the international crisis.

The entire Dawson community is welcome to join the First Peoples’ Centre at 12 p.m. on the Feb. 14 for a vigil in Oliver’s (2C.17).

February 8th, 2023

Filming took place at Dawson on Jan. 24 and 30 for the production of a documentary series entitled Warrior Up, which will air on APTN and stream on  APTNlumi later this year. The series follows inspiring and activist Indigenous youth aged 15 to 26 as they face challenges and make positive changes happen in their communities and beyond.

Film actor Joshua Odjick from the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation was the host for this episode and he interviewed the student founders of IndigeSTEM peer tutoring group, Rotshennón:ni Two-Axe (Health Science) & Kayla Spencer-Young (Pure & Applied Science), and their faculty advisor Joel Trudeau (Physics). They also captured footage of the students at the college and doing a moose heart dissection lab.

"We are very grateful for the opportunity to share the work we've been doing," Rotshennón:ni and Kayla said. "We believe that shedding light on the project and its impacts can have a positive outcome for the Indigenous community. Overall the experience was very rewarding and the crew was quite fun to work with. We hope to inspire others to undertake similar projects and to create change within their own communities."

At the end of the night, judges Andréa Cole (Dean of Creative and Applied Arts), Jacinta Luis (Faculty, Music) and visiting guest judge Chad Lindsay, a jazz music teacher from Vanier College, chose Aliyah Sarimazi to be Dawson's entry in the regional contest on March 25 at Cégep du Vieux-Montréal.
