Book your class for the Cooking for Justice learning experience

As an extension of the Food Justice Program at Dawson College, which offers free vegetarian or vegan meals and snacks five days a week, the Office of Sustainability wanted to keep the goodwill and love going through the launch of the Cooking for Justice program last fall.

Every month, faculty and their students come together to create a beautiful meal that is donated to Resilience Montreal, a local day shelter for unhoused and economically precarious individuals living in Montreal.

Last semester six classes, totalling 219 students, cooked 163 litres of food providing 12 meals for 150 people per meal for Resilience Montreal visitors.

The purpose of this program is to:

  • Create the opportunity for students to engage in mutual aid to those outside of the Dawson Community who need support and love;
  • Demonstrate one of multiple pathways to on the ground advocacy and activism;
  • Fulfil key elements of the Graduate Profile Outcomes such as
    • Teamwork and Leadership Skills
    • Health & Well-being
    • Ethical Understanding and Behaviour
    • Social Responsibility and Community Engagement
  • Fulfil relevant program competencies or individual course learning objectives
    • Examine various issues related to citizenship in today’s world
  • Attain critical autonomous adult life skills
  • Through a pre-reading and post activity reflection, students are provided with an opportunity to think about how experiential learning impacts their learning; connect climate change, food/ income precarity, justice and environmental sustainability; take part in a model of attainable activism that creates direct impacts in their community.

To book your class for this activity please contact Diana Rice, drice@dawsoncollege.qc.ca. Dates are available in February, March, and April.
