Dawson staff now have their own lounge
Dawson employees now have a new place to unwind, recharge, and connect. The College’s new staff lounge opened on Feb. 12, and employees can access it using the code shared by the Communications Office in an All Dawson email on the same day.
Located in the former nursing program space on the sixth floor (6B.1), the lounge is a Facilities Management (FAMA) project that transformed an underused area into a comfortable, functional environment.
“The decision was driven by the relocation of the nursing program and the opportunity to repurpose the space into a dedicated area for staff,” said Elias Azar of the Facilities Management team. “The top priorities were to create a comfortable, welcoming environment that supports rest, informal interaction, and functionality, while updating aging infrastructure and improving overall aesthetics.”
“The new staff lounge provides a calm and inviting space where staff can disconnect from their daily tasks, recharge, and interact with colleagues in an informal setting,” he added. “By offering comfortable seating, appropriate amenities, and a pleasant atmosphere, the space encourages wellness, reduces stress, and supports a healthier work-life balance.”
From layout to finishes, the design balances style and usefulness. “We’re especially excited about several thoughtfully designed features in the new lounge, including improved lighting, modern finishes, flexible seating options, and an upgraded kitchenette that better supports daily use,” said Elias. The space incorporates Dawson’s Peace Garden in a mural, features vegetation frames to enhance air freshness, and offers three distinct zones: private, semi-private, and open to accommodate different needs.
Feedback from staff guided the project, and collaboration was key. “The project was a collaborative effort involving the FAMA Department, and in particular the FAMA Renovation Team,” said Elias. “I would also like to sincerely thank Inhwa Choi for her dedication, professionalism, and valuable contributions throughout the process.”
Reflecting on lessons learned, he noted: “Challenges included adapting the existing layout and building systems of a specialized academic space to suit a lounge function. The project highlighted the importance of early user consultation, flexibility in design, and careful coordination between teams, lessons that will be valuable for future renovation projects at Dawson.”
The new lounge is a serene, modern space that reflects Dawson’s commitment to our overarching value of well-being for all.
