Do “Future-You” a Favour – Plan Next Year’s Courses IN French Now
Summer hasn’t even started, but we know August will be here in what feels like no time. If you are teaching courses IN French next year, do “future-you” a favor and lay the groundwork for next year’s teaching now. Browse the program and choose among the 12 events that the Teaching in French Task Force has designed to help teachers get ready to teach courses IN French at Dawson.
In case you missed the events we offered this past year, we are re-offering three of our most popular workshops. We have :
- a presentation designed to help you understand the context of law 14 and the specific challenges we expect for multi-level classes (Lemons to lemonade: Défis et stratégies pour l’enseignement de cours EN français)
- a workshop about developing learning activities that will work well for a multilevel course IN French (Strategies for engaging learning activities)
- a workshop about designing evaluations that give all students with different levels of French the chance to succeed (Évaluer EN français et non LE français).
Throughout the year, many of you expressed concern about finding equivalent resources in French. To help address this need, we have teamed up Dawson’s librarians to plan a hands-on session called Trouver des sources disciplinaires en français: Ask a Dawson librarian! We also have a brand-new workshop planned in collaboration with SAAC in which you can explore tools to support writing, reading, and editing in French for both teachers and students (Maximizing access to learning materials in French: outils et astuces pour aider les profs comme les étudiants!).
Finally, we have invited guest-speakers to bring their insight into topics pertinent to teaching courses IN French:
- Andy Van Drom of Cégep Limoilou will talk about boosting student motivation with metacognitive strategies that foster a growth mindset—adaptable to any discipline (Student Growth Mindset).
- Sonia Blouin of Cégep André-Laurendeau and Anne-Marie Paquette from AQPC will explore practical ways to teach your field’s unique language (L’enseignement lexical disciplinaire: les mots au service de l’apprentissage).
- Stéphanie Lanctôt from Université de Sherbrooke will speak about how to guide and assess student writing through genre-based strategies and collaborative activities (Littératie disciplinaire EN français)
In addition to the workshops, you can get a head start on planning your specific course by registering for a one-on-one course planning support session.
The series is taking place on the 21st, 22nd, 28th and 29th of May, with events every morning and afternoon. Bring lunch and join us for a “midi-causerie” to share plans, fears, and strategies with other teachers in the same situation. Coffee will be served! Register for all events here.
We look forward to seeing you in May! It will be great to start the summer knowing you have everything you need to meet the new challenge of teaching in French.
