Careers

Economists work for small, medium-sized, and large transnational companies in the resource, manufacturing, and financial sectors of the economy. They also work for different government departments, public institutions, and international organizations. Economists undertake economic analysis of projects. They analyze various markets, such as the stock market, and forecast the most likely outcomes in these markets. Economists formulate, undertake, and evaluate the economic policies of governments. Examples of where economists work include:

  • The commercial banks
  • International financial institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (MF)
  • Regional development banks such as the African Development Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank
  • Development agencies such as The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)
  • Multinational organizations of the United Nations
  • Non-government organizations (OXFAM, Development and Peace)
  • Municipal, provincial, and federal governments
  • Think tanks (CD Howe Institute, The Canadian Centre for Policy Analysis)
  • Colleges and universities as professors
