Description
In ancient Rome, the infamous emperor Caligula reverses his sagging fortunes by profiting from a high-stakes wager on a chariot race. He rewards the winning horse, Incitatus, by appointing him as lord consul of the Roman Empire. The leadership and citizens of Rome begin dutifully worshiping Incitatus, whinnying salutations and wearing their hair in ponytails. When a beautiful human bride, Ameana, is chosen for Incitatus, the animal’s owner, a handsome young man from the country named Selanus, poses as the lord consul conjured in human form in order to make her marriage to a horse compatible. A jealous Caligula dons a horse costume to impersonate Incitatus so that he may have Ameana for himself, but is thwarted by a predacious taverner who tries to prod the hapless emperor into siring a mule with his “she-ass,” Milonia. A madcap, satirical comedy that delights in skewering authoritarian rule and the sycophants who blindly enable it. Directed by Matt Holland and performed by the third-year graduating students of the Professional Theatre Program.
