The Rover
Playwright: Aphra BehnDirector: Stéphane Zarov
Student Groups: Year 3
Description
Aphra Behn (1640-1689) was the first woman to make a living as an author and playwright. She lived and wrote during the Restoration, when all of England was throwing off the shackles of the puritan interregnum and women first appeared on the English stage. And so The Rover is Aphra Behn herself «throwing off the shackles» and writing exactly the kind of play she wanted to see on stage — full of Female pleasures, masquerades, sword fights — with added commentary on gender, power dynamics and social norms. Like a Thelma & Louise from 1677. Directed by Stéphane Zarov and performed by the third year graduating students of the Professional Theatre Program
