Congratulations to our first Environment & Sustainability Certificate graduates!

The Environment & Sustainability Certificate had its official launch this semester and we are very happy to congratulate our 17 certificate graduates! Students came from several backgrounds including Health Science, Environmental Studies, Civil Engineering Technology as well as Environmental Science.

The graduation ceremony was held on a beautiful sunny day in the Peace Garden. Students were able to meet with their teachers, enjoy some light refreshments and receive a small gift with their certificates. We are so proud of all their hard work during their time at Dawson and wish them all the best in their future endeavors.

Students completed the certificate this semester by getting involved several ways. By retroactively cross-listing courses from Fall 2021, we offered 37 certificate courses with the participation of over 40 faculty members. Teachers actively got their students involved in the certificate and we have seen enrollment increase to 123 students over the course of the semester.

Beyond courses, students volunteered with Living Campus, presented during Earth Week, attended and reflected on the Environmental Seminars, attended climate strikes and worked with Green Earth Club among other initiatives. Students completed impressive class projects related to sustainability.

Some project highlights include the second-year Illustration students each visually representing one of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals that were on display in the 5C hallway during Erath Week. This project was led by Stephanie Aubin and Maria Chronopoulos.

Another series of great student works were led by Adam Kingsland, where third-year Mechanical Engineering students had to research and present a “campus greenification project”. One group designed and built a pollinator post and attached it to a “no parking” sign near the Peace Garden to provide habitat for our native bees. Check it out for yourselves!

Thank you to all the excellent faculty and staff that helped out over the year, and we hope to see many more initiatives from first-year students!
