Janice Harvey to present lecture May 7 as Prix Paul-André Linteau recipient
Retired History faculty member and Dawson College Scholar in Residence, Janice Harvey was awarded the first ever Prix Paul-André Linteau. The prize is awarded by the Institut d’histoire de l’Amerique français for a book written in the last year on Montreal history.
Janice’s book is entitled Their Benevolent Design: Conservative Women and Protestant Child Charities in Montreal. With meticulous care and sensitivity, Their Benevolent Design sheds light on the still little-known world of Protestant charities that emerged in 19th-century Montreal. The book thus shines a spotlight on several generations of Montreal elite women who, for over a century, dedicated themselves to protecting underprivileged children and supporting women in precarious situations.
In recognition of her book, the Institut d’histoire de l’Amerique français are hosting a lecture by Janice which will feature opening remarks by historian and professor emeritus at UQAM Paul-André Linteau. It will take place on Thursday, May 7 beginning at 6 PM in the Multimedia Room – L’Éperon (in the main pavilion) at the Pointe-à-Callière Museum (350 Place Royale, Montreal, H2Y 3Y5).
Note: The lecture will be in French with some explanations in English. Price: Voluntary contribution (Suggested rate: $5)
