Dawson Graphic Design students come second and third in provincial graphic design competition

Two Dawson College Graphic Design students have earned second and third place in the esteemed Marc H. Choko Bursary competition.

Visitors to the McCord Stewart Museum can view the work of second-place winner Catherine Lin and third-place winner Laureline Dodin in the atrium until April 26. Alongside their posters, the exhibition features works by five other Dawson Graphic Design students.

Proud teacher François Martin (pictured, with second-place winner Catherine Lin) noted that out of 100 posters submitted to the competition, seven of the 15 runner-up posters on display at the museum were created by Dawson students. These works will also be included in the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) archives collection.

Faculty Learning Community connects students with independent journalism

Journalism isn’t always boring. In fact, it can feel like a game of cops and robbers. That’s what ALC students discovered during a recent visit from Chris Curtis, founder of Montreal’s The Rover. The talk was organized through a Faculty Learning Community (FLC) on journalism and media literacy, which brings together faculty and others from across disciplines to develop tools and approaches for teaching media literacy in the classroom.

With over 37,000 Instagram followers, Chris has become known for condensing complex local issues into accessible reels, offering an alternative to mainstream media and meeting audiences where they already are. The approach resonated strongly with students.

Dawson student tackles ER wait times with award-winning project

Everyone can agree that waiting in a Quebec hospital emergency room is a problem that needs solving. Dawson Science student Zhijian (Jian) Sun and his project partner, Vanier College student Nu Kim Anh Ton, have developed a promising solution through their science fair project entitled ERgo.

Jian loves solving complicated problems. “Everyone who's been to the ER knows the endless wait, and when you look at the data, Quebec ERs are among the most overcrowded in the country,” he said. “I wanted to know: is there a smarter way to prioritize patients and reduce those wait times? The answer to that question became ERgo.”

It engages students in critically examining fast fashion and the global web of economic, social, and environmental relations that sustain it. Dawson Theatre presents “The Rover” April 20 – May 2

The Professional Theatre Department is pleased to present The Rover, by Aphra Behn, performed by the third-year graduating students. Behn was the first woman in England to make a living from her writing as an author and playwright.

She lived during the Restoration, when all of England was throwing off the shackles of the puritan regime and women first appeared on the English stage. And so The Rover is Aphra Behn herself “throwing off the shackles” and writing exactly the kind of play she wanted to see on stage — full of female pleasures, masquerades, intrigue, and sword fights — with added commentary on gender, power dynamics and social norms. Like a Thelma & Louise from 1677. Directed by Stéphane Zarov. Free previews April 20 and 21. $5 tickets for Dawson community.

The Lottery of Immigration

As part of an intensive course this winter on Migrant Justice, we visited multiple organizations that devote themselves to migrants and help them with their struggles. In a class of around 25 students, we were led by Benjamin Lander, our teacher, to explore Montreal through the lens of migration. This adventure took place between Jan. 13 Jan. 16; we met for several more days in March. Our itinerary in January consisted of five organizations: The Immigrant Workers Center, the JIA Foundation in Chinatown, The Refugee Center, Welcome Collective, and Solidarity Across Borders. Each of these resources shed light on fundamental issues immigrants and undocumented people are faced with on the daily.

Celebrated Dawson graduate and Lieutenant Governor’s Youth Medal recipient Bradley Heaven, who was born with Dyskenetic Cerebral Palsy, and his aide Dan O'Connor are coming back to Dawson College!

Brad and Dan, in collaboration with author and Dawson English teacher Andrew Katz and professional illustrator and Dawson grad Antonio Luzano, warmly invite you to their book launch for RUN: The Making of a Graphic Novel, taking place in Oliver’s on Thursday April 23 from 5-7.

Each book will have its own handwritten number, making it a one-of-a-kind collector’s item, and will feature stories, sketches, storyboards and other artwork that readers rarely get to hear or see, along with a sneak peek of the opening chapter from the graphic novel.

1$ from every book will also go to support March of Dimes Canada, a charity which provides a wide range of services to people with disabilities throughout the country.

There will be food and music, as well as a silent auction that includes the chance to be drawn as a character in the final graphic novel.

Thanks for running with us! Hope to see you at the launch.

Best wrist exercises for computer users

Many people in the Dawson community spend long hours at the computer. This can strain your hands and wrists, so taking a few moments to stretch throughout the day helps keep them flexible and pain-free.
