Student report on first Model UN Conference at Dawson
One month has passed since the first-ever Dawson College Model United Nations (DCMUN) conference, which took place Jan. 17-19. The DCMUN team had fun at what is now the biggest CEGEP conference in the world. Participants Anaya Ray and Bassma Al Atrache were two volunteers for the event, which hosted more than 100 participants.

Dawson will host CCAA Women’s Basketball Nationals in 2026
On Feb. 14, the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) announced that Dawson College is the official host of the 2026 CCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship. The event will occur from March 18 to 21, 2026 at the Tony Proudfoot Gymnasium.
Over the years, the Dawson Blues Women’s Basketball Team has achieved remarkable success, including two silver medals, and two bronze medals within the last nine years, the CCAA said in their news release.

Book sale for Chez Doris & Women’s Day celebration for employees
The DSSU, DTU and ADP will be hosting a celebration in honour of International Women’s Day.
On Monday, March 10, from 12 PM-2 PM in the Rose Lounge (7C.5), there will be a book sale of new and used books and a collection of cash donations in which all monies raised will be donated on behalf of the three unions to Chez Doris.
The book sale will be cash only. If you would like to donate books for the sale, you can drop them off either at the Library Circulation Desk or to Christine or Carey in 4A.1 by Thursday, March 6 at 4 PM.
A light lunch will be available while supplies last. We ask that you please bring your own mug if having coffee.
While students are welcome to buy books, the event is intended for employees only.
Ionkwatónhahere (we are celebrating) – Indigenous Peoples’ Week 2025
Ionkwatónhahere is a kanien’kéha word that means ‘we are celebrating’. Organizers of Indigenous Peoples' Week at Dawson College are putting the emphasis on all the incredible contributions that First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples make in all facets of life.
The dates for Ionkwatónhahere - IPW 2025 will be from Monday, March 31 to Thursday, April 3. Activities will be organized in two separate streams: cultural programming specifically for Indigenous students at Dawson, and broader educational activities for the entire Dawson Community. Stay tuned for more information. A complete schedule will be published at the beginning of March.

Dawson Reads Feb. 26 event with Alexander MacLeod
The Dawson Reads Writer Series features author Alexander MacLeod reading, talking about his work, and taking questions on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 12 PM in 5B.16. QWF College Writers Award finalist and recent Dawson graduate Clara Frey will also be reading from her work. The event is open to the public.
Alexander MacLeod's work has appeared in The New Yorker, Granta, The Guardian, and The Globe and Mail. His first collection of short stories, Light Lifting, was named a finalist for the Scotiabank Giller Prize, The Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, and the Commonwealth Book Prize. In 2019, he won an O Henry Prize. His most recent collection, Animal Person, was published in 2022 and was recognized as a "Book of the Year" byThe New Yorker, The Irish Times, The Globe and Mail and CBC Books. Alexander lives in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and teaches at Saint Mary’s University.
MacLeod holds degrees from McGill University, the University of Notre Dame, and the University of Windsor. He currently lives in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and teaches at Saint Mary's University in Halifax.
In 2024, he edited, with Souvankham Thammavongsa the special 35th anniversary edition of The Journey Prize Anthology.

Graduating Nursing students stage Health Expo Feb. 28
Welcome to the second edition of the third-year health expo. Nursing students have curated information and resources for the Dawson community. Subjects are varied and interesting and touch a variety of possible populations present at Dawson. From how to create a first aid kit to demystifying IUD's. Come encourage our graduating class! The expo will be Friday, Feb. 28 from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM in the lower atrium.
Documentary series on Native people and issues
Shekon Dawson community. My name is Kanerahtiio Hemlock and I am the Indigenous Pedagogical Consultant here at the college. Join me for the first in this semester-long series of documentaries focusing on Native people and issues. Because it is timely, the first documentary will be Incident at Oglala: The Leonard Peltier story on Feb. 5….
Black History Month at Dawson
Dawson has a Black History Month coordinating committee that is hard at work. The committee members are: Melaine Campbell, Rhea Gurnagul, Christine Layne, Ashley Northfleet, Simeon Pompey, Kayla Smith and Trudy Ste. Croix.
Some events are scheduled and others are still being developed.

- The Dawson Student Union is working with the Legacy student club to put together a BHM banner that will be hung the week of Feb. 3.
- Khan Bouba-Dalambaye will give a talk entitled Sense of Belonging & Code Switching on Feb. 4 at 10 AM in 5B.16 as part of Social Science week.
- Wednesday, Feb. 12: Black vendors market in the Lower Atrium hosted by DSU, Legacy and Campus Life
- Thursday, Feb. 20: Caribbean Day will feature Caribbean food for sale to celebrate Black history and to raise funds for the volleyball team.
