Thousands of bulbs planted on campus this month
November 24th, 2023
Student volunteers worked with the Office of Sustainability on Nov. 14 to plant 2,700 bulbs in the Peace Garden in just two hours! Five hundred of those bulbs were planted around the big tree in the Chiefs’ Garden, Jenn de Vera said.
The volunteers planted more bulbs in other areas around the campus later that week. Pink bulbs were planted near Anastasia’s tree, which was planted in memory of Anastasia De Sousa. Around the Peace Pole, blue and red bulbs were planted to represent the new partnership with Canadore College. The North Bay college received some bulbs from Dawson and will be sending photos in the spring of their blooming campus.
A total of 4,000 bulbs were planted at Dawson in the Peace Garden and the Three Sisters Garden. Hundreds more have been gifted to partner institutions and organizations.
The tulips and spring bulbs were purchased from a Dutch wholesale supplier by the Dawson Foundation. It was Dawson’s biggest bulb order ever.

Sustainable Development Goals artwork by Illustration students showcased by Colleges and Institutes Canada
October 11th, 2023
“The 17 Sustainable Development Goals” illustrated by students in the Illustration program at Dawson won the 2023 student art competition of Colleges and Institutes Canada.
“36 illustration students collaborated on this fanzine project along with Sustainable Dawson,” said Stéphanie Aubin, co-chair of and instructor in the program. “They had to create an illustration that would be evocative and powerful visually. Their illustration could be based on a personal experience or a researched fact. Each student's approach to their subject was different, which makes the project even more unique.”
Three of the winning students shared their thoughts about the project. Visit the link below to read the three interviews and for a link to view the two fanzines of the SDG art.
Peace Week 2023 proposed a world where everyone’s identity and voice can be celebrated
October 11th, 2023
Dawson College's annual Peace Week has always been a platform for insightful discussions on pressing social issues. In 2023, the theme of the 8th Annual Peace Week was "Exultation: Queer Freedoms & Futures."
This event, which was held Sept. 13-21, celebrated the vibrant history of queerness while exploring the possibilities of a world where freedom of expression, safety, and unconditional love prevail for all gender and sexual identities. The event brought together a diverse group of speakers who shared their thoughts and experiences on the path towards true liberation from oppressive norms.

Night observation session pushes species count to 810
October 11th, 2023
In our goal to get to 1,000 species identified on Dawson's downtown campus in 1,000 days, our total is now at 810 species! Over the last two weeks, there were:
- 119 observations
- 22 new species
- 13 new observers
"A large contributing factor was the Nighttime Biodiversity Observation we did last week," said Brian Mader, project lead and a Biology teacher. "Two teachers, one staff member, five students and one alumnus stayed for sunset and beyond with insect traps to observe biodiversity at night.
"Students were able to observe multiple bats and a skunk! Although the photos were not great for these organisms, students were able to get some nice shots of a House Centipede (Cassiana Silva-Young, Enriched Pure & Applied Science) and a Narrow-winged Tree Cricket (Jacob Davies, Environmental Science).
