Peace Week begins Sept. 13

September 1st, 2021

The 6th Annual Peace Week kicks off on Monday, Sept. 13 with two very special outdoor activities: an introduction to Sustainable Happiness with Jennifer de Vera as well as an opportunity to learn and work in the urban gardens.

Peace Centre updates

September 1st, 2021

Federal Election Debate - virtual with the candidates from Ville Marie-Sud Ouest: Sept. 9 at 2:30 pm. Topic: Climate Change & the Environment. This will be a 75-minute debate with an opportunity at the end for students to ask questions of the candidates. Faculty who are interested in streaming this into their class should contact Diana Rice or Catherine Braithwaite.

Interested in engaging your students in decolonization and reconciliation?  In preparation for Sept. 30, the National Day of Mourning of victims and survivors of the Residential Schools, there will be a series of events open to the community to provide educational awareness of the legacy of colonialism as well as joy and resurgence in Indigenous communities across Turtle Island.

One of the best first steps is to engage with a Blanket Exercise. This is an interactive learning activity which brings participants through the course of Indigenous history from pre-contact to present day. This interactive session is de​signed to bring participants together to build a shared factual understanding of the legacy of colonization in Turtle Island.  We look forward to seeing you.

Blanket Exercise open to all Aug. 19

August 18th, 2021

August 19th, 9 a.m. in 5B.16: Diane Labelle will facilitate a Blanket Exercise, open to all employees of the College. This is one of a series of events that will be hosted at the College in August & September leading up to and including Sept. 30, the National Day of Mourning for Residential School Victims and Survivors.

A schedule of events will be released over the coming weeks that will invite the participation of the entire Dawson Community. Also, be on the lookout for special displays in the library featuring award winning Indigenous authors & different thematic book resources accessible to the Dawson Community.

Peace Week begins Sept. 13

The 5th Annual Peace Week will kick off Sept. 13 with an in-person beading workshop with Cory Hunlin, Keynote Speaker Tracy Lindberg and cap off on Sept. 22 with the amazing Dr. Philip  Howard's virtual professional development workshop. Keynote Earth Week talk addressed struggles for environmental justice in Indigenous and Black communities

Earth Week organizers were able to take advantage of our current online reality by virtually bringing in Keynote Speaker Dr. Ingrid Waldron of Dalhousie University, who is also a graduate of Dawson (Class of 1983, Social Science).

Sustainability Programs Open House Wednesday, April 21 at 10 a.m.

Come meet representatives from colleges and universities that offer Sustainability degrees and/or certificates, including Dawson’s Environmental & Sustainability Certificate.

Beehive Opening Wednesday, April 21 at 12 p.m.

Take a peek inside Dawson’s 4H rooftop hive – and  experience honey bees remotely!

Keynote Speaker Dr. Ingrid Waldron Thursday, April 22 at 1 p.m.

Author of There’s Something in the Water: Environmental Racism in Indigenous and Black Communities, which was turned into a 2020 Netflix documentary, Dr. Waldron recently co-founded the Anti-Environmental Racism Coalition. Organizations in the environmental and climate change sector are collaborating on projects and sharing expertise and resources to address environmental racism in Indigenous, Black and other racialized communities across Canada.

March 31 at 1 p.m.: Poetry & the Art of Black Resistance, with Shanice Nicole, Faith Pare, Lindsay Young and moderated by Deanna Smith.  Beginning with a recitation of their works Shanice, Lindsay and Faith will showcase their poetic talents. Following this, Deana Smith will moderate a discussion on the need for inclusion of Black authors and artists as a part of the western artistic & literary canon and how the art is a means of resilience & resistance. April 6 at 5:30 pm: Leanne  Betasamosake Simpson, scholar, author, activist & artist extraordinaire join us as the final speaker in the Indigenous Climate Justice speaker series  (JAC, Kativik School Board and Dawson Peace Centre).  This series seeks to launch an ongoing discussion around climate injustice. Focusing on Indigenous climate action and pursuits of justice leads us to re-imagine how we conceive of, envision, and tackle the climate crisis. After “Rebellion” students discuss climate change at Feb. 18 panel

February 9th, 2021

Five inspiring Dawson students and alumni will discuss their views and actions on the Climate Crisis at the Environmental Seminar at Dawson (virtually) on Feb. 18 at 10 a.m.

The 2019 climate march was featured in an episode of David Suzuki's The Nature of Things entitled "Rebellion". The mobilization of the College was spearheaded by the Green Earth Club. Students will discuss their involvement in the march as youth activists and present their current projects.

Presentations will be followed by a Q & A. This panel is being moderated by Brian Mader and introduced by Anna-Liisa Aunio. Please watch the episode Rebellion, which is available free on CBC Gem here:
