Vigil held at Dawson for MMIWGT2S

February 22nd, 2023

The First People’s Centre organized a vigil in the Oliver’s student space at Dawson on Feb. 14 to commemorate the MMIWGT2S (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Trans and Two-Spirited.) There is an epidemic of violence against Indigenous women in Canada. The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls has reported that Indigenous women and girls make up 24 per cent of female homicide victims in Canada, despite only making up four per cent of the country’s female population.

The report cited research that “Indigenous women and girls are 12 times more likely to be murdered or missing than any other women in Canada, and 16 times more likely than Caucasian women. … Other than murder, statistics also reveal how Indigenous women consistently experience higher rates and more severe forms of physical assault and robbery than other groups in Canada. Sexual violence is a huge problem in all its forms: Indigenous women are sexually assaulted three times more often than non-Indigenous women, and most of the women and children trafficked in Canada are Indigenous.”

The 2021-2022 annual report of the Dawson Foundation is now available. Take a look to learn more about how the community came together over a challenging year in the face of a pandemic to financially support students in need, host a virtual version of Artists in Bloom (raising $6, 830), as well as reward excellence and support students financially through our Awards and Scholarships program.  Full 2021-2022 financial statements are also available for consultation.

Through annual fundraising events, engagement with alumni and planning new initiatives in collaboration with diverse members of the community, the Dawson Foundation remains committed to supporting excellence and student success at Dawson College by being a key source of financial support over and above the budgets provided by the Quebec government.

MMIWGT2S to be remembered on Feb. 14

February 8th, 2023

The red dresses currently hanging in the atrium are there in memory of the lives of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Trans, and 2 Spirited (MMIWGT2S) peoples across North America.

Several Dawson students, including Indigenous students working in collaboration with the First Peoples’ Centre, will be organizing an awareness-raising vigil on Feb. 14. Valentine’s Day, typically a day to show love to a significant other, was determined to be the best day for the annual awareness campaign by Indigenous communities. The day is an opportunity to show love to those affected by such violence and to raise awareness of the international crisis.

The entire Dawson community is welcome to join the First Peoples’ Centre at 12 p.m. on the Feb. 14 for a vigil in Oliver’s (2C.17).
