College students often need a little help with their studies, especially in the first semester transition from high school. The role of Dawson’s Academic Skills Centre is to help students improve their learning, reading and writing skills. Students can meet with education advisors and tutors on an individual basis, or in small groups and workshops. The Academic Skills Centre is located in 6D.2 (in the library).

For students who are currently registered at Dawson College, we offer free confidential counselling services. We can help you with career and educational planning, adjusting to student life, managing stress, resolving conflicts, dealing with personal problems or facing challenges in your life. The first step is to come to one of our counselling drop-ins. During the drop-in time you will meet privately with a counselling professional in order to work out a plan of action that addresses your needs. Our drop-in times are posted daily outside of 2D.2 and on MyDawson.

Trying to make ends meet while you are a student can be a bit of a challenge. Don’t panic! The Financial Aid Department is where you can find information on Government Loans and Bursaries and other support systems set up to help you pay for your education. The Financial Aid Department provides a variety of financial assistance services to students in need who are enrolled full-time at Dawson College, including Quebec Loan and Bursaries application assistance, book loans, emergency loans, budgeting tips, a food bank, and snack centre.

For students who are registered at Dawson College, confidential health services are available from a nurse, gynecologist, and general practitioner. The nurse can provide support and information on the following: lifestyle habits (nutrition, physical activity, smoking cessation, stress management, etc.), contraception, the morning-after pill, pregnancy testing, STI prevention and testing, and other health issues. Drop-in times as well as appointments are offered with the nurse. The two doctors come once a week and are seen by appointment only. All services are free with the Quebec Medicare card. To be part of the Student Health Promotion Team you must contact Julie Drolet.

The Student Employment Centre is responsible for: student job bank, job search tips, résumé building, interview techniques, job fairs, job/volunteer opportunities, job search workshops. The Dawson Job Bank is a great tool for students looking for employment opportunities. Students can find full-time jobs, part-time jobs, summer jobs & volunteer opportunities. In addition, students have access to information concerning job leads and job search tips.

A core academic and student service, the staff and professionals of the Library support the research, resource, and information literacy needs of students and faculty members, across all courses and programs offered at Dawson College. Working together to help you succeed! Our department offers a variety of services that enable students with documented disabilities to pursue college studies. We assist students with hearing, visual, or motor/coordination impairments, learning disabilities, mental health issues, or chronic medical conditions. Aid is available to both day and evening division students enrolled in credit courses. Those with temporary disabilities resulting from accidents or illness can also use our centre.

The Dawson College First Peoples’ Centre provides comprehensive services including academic, para-academic and cultural support for Indigenous students (First Nations, Metis, and Inuit) who self-identify. In addition, the First Peoples’ Centre provides access to Indigenous resources, college-wide. The Centre offers a peaceful, culturally sensitive environment where students can learn, study, socialize, and find community. The Centre is a member of both the Dawson College First Peoples’ Initiative as well as the Indigenous Education Council.
