Two Phys. Ed. classes gave Peace Garden a facelift

The Peace Garden was looking its best on Sept. 11 as families, survivors, guests, dignitaries, police officers and first responders, members of the Dawson community and media gathered for the 20-year commemoration of the Dawson tragedy.

That welcoming setting was thanks in large part to the efforts of students in two sections of the intensive Physical Education Eco-Landscaping course, taught by Angela Corinthios and Paul Wasacz.

Registration is open for Ped Day

Faculty members and professionals have until Wednesday, Sept. 23 to register for the Fall Pedagogical Day program on Friday, Sept. 25. Register Here

Workshops will take place at 10:30 AM and at 1:30 PM.

The Opening Plenary “The Science of Learning from Failure: Practical Strategies for Teachers and Students” by Fiona Rawle will take place at 9 AM in 5B.16 (light breakfast is served from 8:30 AM) .

Dr. Fiona Rawle is the Associate Dean, Pedagogical Development and Scholarship, at the University of Toronto Mississauga, and a Professor, Teaching Stream, in the Dept. of Biology. She holds a Ph.D in Pathology and Molecular Medicine and her current research focuses on failure-driven learning, the science of learning, and bias in STEM. She brings a scientist’s mindset to her teaching, using evidence-based, active learning strategies to engage students and foster curiosity about science resulting in numerous awards, including the 3M National Teaching Fellowship.

Faculty Learning Communities run for the entire academic year. The 2026-27 FLCs have mostly set their dates for the coming weeks and months. If you would like to join one of the FLCs, email their respective facilitator or simply show up to one of the upcoming meetings!

Journeys supports more Indigenous students’ transition to college

Thanks to outreach efforts and faculty members who have woven experiential and land-based learning into the curriculum, Dawson’s Journeys program has attracted enough students to launch two cohorts for the first time.

New Foundation executive director is here for Dawson students

Seasoned fundraiser and community leader Anthony Johnson began his new role as Executive Director of the Dawson College Foundation on Sept. 8. Most recently, he served as Interim Executive Director of AIDS Community Care Montreal (ACCM). Passionate about animal welfare, Anthony spent many years with the Montreal SPCA, where he helped raise more than $40 million in support of the organization's mission.

Indigenous Perspectives series continues Sept. 30

Indigenous Perspectives: How decolonization and addressing climate change are interlinked.

Kanerahtiio Hemlock is the Indigenous Pedagogical Consultant at Dawson College. On Sept. 30 at 10 AM, he will give a 30-minute presentation followed by a 30-minute video clip before opening the floor for discussion.

Vote early at advance polling station at Dawson

Elections Quebec is setting up an advance polling station in the Lower Atrium (metro level) at Dawson Sept. 25, Sept. 29-30 (from 9:30 AM to 8 PM) and Oct. 1 (9:30 AM to 2 PM). It will be a chance for all employees, students and the general public to avoid lines and vote early in the Quebec election ahead of Election Day on Oct. 5. You can vote at Dawson for your local candidate no matter what riding you live in.

To vote, you need to show a government-issued ID card, such as your RAMQ card, driver's license or passport. It is helpful if you bring your voter information card but not obligatory.

Order of Excellence in Education: call for nominations by Oct. 9

Do you know someone who has made an outstanding contribution to education in Québec?

The Québec government is accepting nominations for the 2026 Order of Excellence in Education, the province’s highest honour in the field of education. Submit a nomination by Oct. 9.

Peace Studies Certificate inspires Dawson students to build a better world

“I want to be part of this!” That’s what Peace Studies Certificate Coordinator Ivan Freud thought when he saw images of retired Director General Richard Filion greeting students on the first day they returned to campus after the terrible events of Sept. 13, 2006.

Twenty years after the Dawson tragedy, the Peace Studies Certificate continues to help students explore peace building, social justice and nonviolence while fostering a community committed to positive change.

Dawson community survived its worst day through resilience, compassion and well-being for all

Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006, began as a beautiful sunny day. Then, "a lightning strike came out of nowhere," said Richard Filion, who was Director General of Dawson College at the time.

The story of how the Dawson community responded in the days, months and years that followed and how that response helped shape a lasting vision of well-being, resilience and peace is important for the Dawson community to know and to remember.

On Sept. 11, Dawson remembered

On Friday, Sept. 11, students, staff, retirees and alumni were joined by the family of Anastasia De Sousa, survivors and dignitaries in the Peace Garden for a 20-year commemoration of the Dawson tragedy.

We honoured the memory of Anastasia, supported those whose lives were forever changed by the events of Sept. 13, 2006, and recognized the resilience, solidarity and compassion that helped our community heal.

As an educational institution, Dawson has a responsibility to help each new generation understand the history that has shaped our community and the values that define it. By sharing this story, we reaffirm our commitment to respect, understanding, peace and care for one another.

Well-being for all remains a core value of Dawson College. Our commitment to fostering self-care, caring for others and caring for Nature is rooted in the strength and resilience demonstrated by the Dawson community in the weeks, months and years that followed.

Winter on Rue Duluth by Luna Kramer-Jamet wins Liberal Arts Brick Books Poetry Prize

Second-year Liberal Arts student Luna Kramer-Jamet is the 2026 winner of the Liberal Arts Brick Books Poetry Prize. Her winning sonnet, Winter on Rue Duluth, was published in the Liberal Arts Anthology, an annual student publication that has been produced for more than 25 years. As part of the prize, Luna also received the books published by Brick Books last year.

Sustainability

Turn in your used batteries and help Dawson win

Dawson has joined a friendly campus competition to see who can collect the most used batteries—and we need your help! In collaboration with Environnement Jeunesse and Appel à Recycler® through the Recycle Your Batteries Canada program (Canada’s leader in battery and cell recycling). We need your AA, AAA, and 9-volt batteries. If everyone can bring a minimum of 10 batteries, we will have a good chance of winning!

Bring your used batteries to the Recycling Centre on the second floor, across from the Information Desk, and keep hazardous waste out of landfills.

The deadline is April 1 to reach our goal of 500 kg (over 1,000 lbs.) of batteries!
