Social Science students experience four-day immersion in local solidarity movements

In January, 18 Dawson students from the Social Change & Solidarity (SCS) and General Studies profiles went live on the radio at CKUT: 90.3-FM. “This song is dedicated to the people we met this week from the group Solidarity Across Borders,” announced Emerson Rheault, a student in SCS, into the microphone. “Solidarity was really the theme of this entire week.”

Black History Month at Dawson

Dawson has a Black History Month coordinating committee that is hard at work. The committee members are: Melaine Campbell, Rhea Gurnagul, Christine Layne, Ashley Northfleet, Simeon Pompey, Kayla Smith and Trudy Ste. Croix.

Some events are scheduled and others are still being developed.

Coming up:

The Dawson Student Union is working with the Legacy student club to put together a BHM banner that will be hung the week of Feb. 3.
Khan Bouba-Dalambaye will give a talk entitled Sense of Belonging & Code Switching on Feb. 4 at 10 AM in 5B.16 as part of Social Science week.
Wednesday, Feb. 12: Black vendors market in the Lower Atrium hosted by DSU, Legacy and Campus Life
Thursday, Feb. 20: Caribbean Day will feature Caribbean food for sale to celebrate Black history and to raise funds for the volleyball team.

Social Science Week is Feb. 3-7

The Social Science program is once again offering a week of talks on a variety of topics that will be of interest to the entire college community. Social Science Week will take place Feb. 3 to 7. The program is found here.

Social Science Week is an opportunity for students to see what contemporary Social Scientists are up to and to learn more about the many pathways Social Science study can lead to. It is also a moment to reflect deeply on the most meaningful questions we face at this point in history, questions about climate catastrophe, our rapidly changing media landscapes, art-making and race-relations, and how to think about conflict, both locally and abroad. These talks invite students and faculty to step out of the constraints of the traditional classroom, and into conversations about the world that is and the world that is to come.

Julie Brosseau new Dean of Academic Systems

Julie Brosseau will begin her new role as Dean of Academic Systems on March 31. She succeeds Carmela Gumelli, who is retiring.

Julie brings extensive academic administrative experience to the role, having served as Associate Dean of Academic Systems since July 2014. Her professional journey includes serving as Associate Dean at Cégep Édouard-Montpetit, working as a mathematics and programming teacher, and gaining management experience in a private school setting.

Helping prepare students to face real life situations

Building the belief that “I’ve got this” was the subject of CRLT teacher Heather Martin’s Performa project. The belief that you can achieve your goals, or self-efficacy, was the focus of her research paper and Intercollegiate Ped Day workshop.

The power of kindness

It is well established that post-secondary students are experiencing elevated levels of stress, anxiety and loneliness. Teachers are also experiencing heightened levels of stress in their workplace.

Kindness and well-being can feed and fuel optimal learning, Dr. John-Tyler Binfet told an audience of about 150 participants during his keynote talk at Intercollegiate Ped Day on Jan. 13.

Documentary series on Native people and issues

Shekon Dawson community. My name is Kanerahtiio Hemlock and I am the Indigenous Pedagogical Consultant here at the college. Join me for the first in this semester-long series of documentaries focusing on Native people and issues. Because it is timely, the first documentary will be Incident at Oglala: The Leonard Peltier story on Feb. 5. The viewing will be followed by an open discussion.

Winter Open House is Feb. 5

Help us spread the word: Dawson's Winter Open House is this coming Wednesday, Feb. 5 from 4 PM to 8 PM.

This is a chance for prospective students and their parents to come ask their questions before the application deadline of March 1. Faculty members, academic advisors and Student Services team members will all be here. It can also be an opportunity for students to see the school on a typical school day and get a feel for the place.

Forces Avenir applications/nominations deadline is Feb. 18

Up to $100,000 will be given out this year in the form of grants and project funding through Forces AVENIR awards.

Forces AVENIR awards recognize, honour and promote the commitment of students and staff in projects that contribute to the development of socially conscious, responsible, active and persevering citizens who are both dedicated to their community and open to the world.

The deadline to apply/nominate is Feb. 18, 2025.

Faculty and professionals connect and learn at winter retreat

On Jan. 8-9, the second edition of Dawson’s Inclusion and Wellness Retreat took place at the picturesque Manoir D’Youville on Île Saint-Bernard in Châteauguay. Fifteeen people from a variety of departments (faculty and professionals) gathered to explore ways we can adapt our teaching approaches, interactions, and course design to meet a wide range of student needs.

The Speculator is on through Feb. 8

The Speculator, which opened Jan. 29, is being performed tonight, Friday and this weekend and next week as well before closing on Feb. 8

The play is a historical drama set in early 18^th century France, when the country is experiencing some of its lowest economic moments. John Law, Scottish economist, gambler and conman, arrives in Paris with a plan to stimulate the French economy. He hires playwright Marivaux to write a play to distract and entertain investors. The French government, nobility, and commoners alike are swept up in the frenzy of Law’s scheme, the Mississippi Company, only to have it come crashing down. A play about greed and deception. Directed by Stefanie Buxton and performed by the third-year graduating students of the Professional Theatre program.

Members of the Dawson community, including students, employees, alumni and retirees, benefit from reduced rates.

Learning from Community in Cuba

On January 14, 10 students and two teachers in the Social Change & Solidarity (SCS) profile returned from a three-week solidarity delegation to Cuba. The trip was organized in partnership with the Centro Martin Luther King, an organization in Cuba that promotes local and global justice through popular education and grassroots community-building.

Push [Yourself] Up Challenge

Human Resources and Student Services are collaborating again to bring the Push [Yourself] Up Challenge!!!

From Feb. 11 to 28, all staff and students are invited to participate.

“The Push-Up Challenge is a free fitness event focused on pushing for better mental health for all Canadians. Participants take on 2,000 push-ups, representing the ~2,000 lives lost to suicide each day, worldwide.” (https://www.thepushupchallenge.ca/)

Feel free to do lunges, squats, skipping rope, jumping jacks, whatever works for you! You do what you can/want.

Last year, we greatly surpassed our modest community goal of 2,000 push-ups. So this year, we are aiming for 50,000 push-ups!

Human Resources is giving $500 in prizes for employees and Student Services is doing the same for students. For all the details, visit the link.

During the week of Feb. 11, there will be a series of activities at Dawson to celebrate Women and Girls in STEM and Medicine. Please join us for events like: Kiosk on Inspiring Minds: Women who shaped STEM and Medicine, Neurophysiology workshop by ThinkSci, seminar on Machine Learning and AI and a movie night.

Graduation will be June 18

Dawson's graduation date is set for Wednesday, June 18 at Place des Arts. The two ceremonies will be at 2:30 PM and at 7:30 PM. More details and ticket info to come closer to the date.
